It’s been a busy couple days over here.
Because:
There are many of you out there who deserve to hear this news by phone. Or by getting an e-mail. Or through a sarcastic gorrilagram of some sort. But I just can’t manage it right now. As you can see by the picture, we’re all pretty tired around here.
Everyone always says things like, “The labor was 8 hours long…” or “She was in labor for 15 hours.” Or something like that. I don’t know where to officially start counting the official labor, but she started having contractions Friday night, and we had the baby Tuesday morning. So no matter how you count it, it was long.
The end result is pretty good though. Little Oot is healthy and happy. He resembles his daddy in that he likes boobs and sleeping. Everything else will be sorted out later.
I won’t trouble you with his measurements. I’ve never really understood the desire people have to quantify a baby. “He’s X big and Y long,” As if the baby is a fish you’re not sure you’re going to keep. Or some prize potato you’re hoping will win a prize at the county fair.
Rest assured that he does posses mass and volume. He has all three dimensions and the requisite number of usual parts. He is a boy child. A Libra. Full of grace. An ox. Pinkish in color. Soft. And we have just received independent verification that he is cute as a button.
I’ve been stockpiling blogs over the last couple months, so you’ll see some of those when I’m too busy writing and being domestic to write a new one. If anything, posts will probably be more frequent for a while.
If you have a piece of baby advice (and it seems like everyone I meet does) feel free to post it below. I will also accept cute baby stories. Everyone likes cute baby stories.
Sweet dreams everyone,
pat

Congratulations to you and your family.
My daughter Lillian is really good. She slept through the night by 6 weeks and never had colic. She will be 2 this November and she has brought my husband and I more joy, laughs and cringes then we ever thought possible. I hope your baby is as easy as mine is.
Congradulations Pat! Adorable baby! :)
hehe….might be a bit late in congratulating you but cngratulations it is….
no cute baby tale to tell though…
my wV: phorm :i dunno…he might get teased.
that being said…he’s adorable!
We just had our duaghter 08/21. Hard work all around, except by me of course…I just sat there. Congrats bro.
Hearty congratulations to Sarah, Pat and Baby Rothfuss! Very exciting news.
Run into me in the Galaxy, I’ll certainly share the “things I definitely should have done differently”, but that’s not really something for a blog post.
Car Seat! Even though you have above average reading comprehension, hie thee to the Portage County Child Passenger Safety Association! I used to work in CPS and know Joan and Kareen well. Tell them I sent you–that’s my one modicum of “influence” anywhere. 80% of seats are used wrong, even when you include vehicle safety engineers.
Oh, and babies don’t bounce. Even the boy ones.
Heh. Best wishes to the three of you.
Dear Pat and Sarah
Congratulations on the birth of you lovely boy. the only advice I can give is if he is not sleeping well you could take him to a chiropractor as we did with our two, my first was a 45 hour labour so it just made sense what with the poor girl getting squished every three minutes for 45 hours we took her at 3 weeks and she has slept thru the night 8 – 8 everynight since and now she is 8, goodluck to both of you do you not feel like this love of your child is the most amazing thing ever!
Congrats Mom and Dad!
This is a ways off, but be careful what you leave on the edge of the counter when he starts walking. You’d never believe what he’ll be able to reach for. And fresh hot tea IS enough to give a baby third degree burns. I speak from experience (I was the baby, but I ended up ok, with some nifty scars that I occasionally pretend were obtained from a tiger attack at Siegfried and Roy in Vegas. You wouldn’t believe how many people actually fall for that).
And, based on what other family members have told me about having boys, be prepared to have the emergency room on speed dial.
Congrats! It’ll be worth every minute!
Brava to Sarah and little Oot! And Bravo to you as well, sir.
Only advice I have is second-hand: “Never raise your hand to your child – it leaves your groin unprotected.”
Enjoy your happy days.
Congrats!! umm im a little jealous, so i found out i was having a baby about a month before you announce it and I am still pregnant ( due on halloween)
Congratulations to you and your lady. What/who was the inspiration(s) for his name? Very beatiful baby. How soon before he is writing his own books? j/k
Long overdue im sure, but only just started looking for absolutely anything you write in hopes of a faint reprisal from sitting n waiting for book two lol.
Congratulations Pat, looks like a cute one. Well done to mummy, and tell her she can now offically scoff at any pain and say “pffft ive given birth love i know pain” especially with that long labour.
Advice… as someone already said. Trust yourself, take peoples advice in mind but remember he’s your little Oot, you will know what to do.
Best of luck and again Congratz :)
First, congratulations! I hope the li’l man grows up liking faeries, sympathy, and all things magical. He also might like learning practical swordplay. Just in case anyone makes a rude comment about a supposed lack of manliness.
Second, a piece of advice I hope you and Sarah do not need. Feel free to pass it on if you know someone who might be able to use it. :-)
As a preamble, my wife said she heard all sorts of horror stories about labor and about giving birth, but no one warned her about how painful breastfeeding could be. If breastfeeding ever starts to become so painful that she dreads breastfeeding, then she might want to see if she can be treated for a yeast infection or for a staph infection. Breastfeeding became a lot easier for my wife once she got her infection taken care of.
I hope you don’t need the advice, but maybe you might run into someone else who might need some relief from the pain of what should be a wonderful experience.
Speaking of wonderful, I hope your little boy is as fun and joyful as our youngest is. Congratulations once again!
hallo,
i just want to say;
so many greetings from switzerland. i read your book, i love it and wish you very mutch fun and emotion, when you slide in an other dimension.
sorry about my english!!! kiss sabrina
Pat,
Every now and then I think about Kvothe and the life you have created for him. Your work has already inspired people around the world.
Now you have Oot to inspire you and Sarah. Congrats on both counts!
If you never share more of Kvothe’s life with the world, it’s okay. It’d be like John Galt in Atlas Shrugged.
We all now know that Kvothe exists, even if it’s only in your head.
All my best
Chris
When I worked at a daycare, a little boy fell on some ice, and had a slightly bloody nose and bit his lip. I brought him inside for some care and clean up. As we were doing this, his mom comes in, and I explain the situation. He looks up, and says, “Mommy it happened like this!” and proceeds to fall face forward into the hard floor. An interesting kid, he was.
