Photo Contest Part I – Shrines.

When I first had the idea for the photo contest, it was completely off-the-cuff. I was making a facebook event for the paperback release date, and I thought, “What the hell. I’ll offer prizes if people want to take pictures of themselves with the new book.”

In my secret heart of hearts, I was thinking that it would be cool if I got maybe eight or ten pictures. Enough so that I could post them up in a blog, have some fun, and give prizes to everyone who played along.

I even had a secret backup plan. If not enough people participated, I would take some photos on my own to pad things out so I wouldn’t look like a big loser.

Suffice to say that I am officially stunned by the response. We ended with over five hundred pictures, so many pictures that it’s taken me hours and hours to download, label, and organize them. I’m sorry that not everyone can get prizes, and that I can’t even display all of them. There were just so many….

Anyway, today we’re going to start with just one category: Best Shrine.

Nice genuflection, you really stuck the dismount.

I like the fact that each of my books seems to have access to its own sword here.

Kneeling in reverential awe – check. Scenic backdrop – check. Dramatic sunset – bonus points.

Wait… is…. is that a frikkin gunblade? Yes. Yes it is.

While it would seem like this picture would be a shoe-in for the win, the mastermind behind it, Captain Joe, can’t win this category. You’ll learn why in more detail during the next blog, but rest assured, this level of awesome will not go unrewarded.

Here’s the runner-up. The Name of the Wind in paperback, playing king of the hill. If you look closely, there’s also a little plush draccus there.

The Winner. At first I thought this might be a very surreal candlelit dinner for a college student, but then I realized that the flowers, food, and drink were being offered up in tribute to the book. Also, the composition of the photo is really nice, though I’ll admit that the lighting makes me wonder if there might not also be a black goat and a knife just off frame.

Remember kids, blood sacrifices won’t get you book two any faster.

The clincher? The person who built the shrine got not only my favorite brand of ramen, but my favorite flavor too. Mmmmm…. Chicken.

Next blog we’ll get more photos, along with a discussion of what the winners actually win, and the revelation of Captain Joe’s tragic secret.

Later all,

pat

Yes! I made the blog! If I died right now only Megan Fox could make this moment any better. But what is this? Captain Joe’s tragic secret? Pat, I told you about that little… problem I have with mayonnaise and lamp shades in trust! Don’t reveal my sordid (distasteful and dirty) past to a worldwide community of readers!Oh dear. But hell yeah! Made the blog! That’s so badass. Me and my gunblade – oh yes, oh yes.Congratulations are due the winner of ‘Best Shrine’! There is no such thing as Ramen Noodle Soup down here in Australia. We have a pale echo known as Maggi 2-minute noodles. They don’t even taste like food! All the best, folks – cheers on a great competition, Pat!~Captain Joe

Man, I’ve always wanted to try some ramen, but I’m quite happy with my non-food 2-minute noodles for now. :) Aussies rule!
Congratulations to the winner, and nice going Captain Joe!

That gunblade looks awesome, by the way.

Try chicken and mushroom. Toss in garlic powder, salt and pepper, and a handful of scullions. It’s the ultimate taste sensation. Trust me.

Scullions as in kitchen workers? I’m thinking you mean scallions. Either that, or you missed the memo on the whole “no blood sacrifices” thing:-)

I can’t wait to see more! I tried to get my husband to dress up as Kvothe (ripped t-shirt, bare, hairy gut showing) and stand in front of a fan in a striding position, holding my guitar in one hand and your book in the other, but he wasn’t game. Besides, he convinced me that probably a million other people already had that idea. I guess I’ll have to see if there’s a “Best Reproduction of one of the Hard(body)Cover photos” category.Personally, I liked the genuflector the best, but the winner was good, too.

Like I said, Megan — it’s the ultimate taste sensation. Some might call it Final. This discussion reminds me of something. Where are our forums, Pat? We need a place to unleash our wild theories.

The pictures were so great! I can’t wait to see the rest of them. I really have to commend Captain Joe for his effort, but the person who did the ramen/book shrine made my day.

Dear god captain Joe!! I have visions of you trekking for miles up a Kilimanjaro style mountain, fighting of savage shell suit clad techno lovers with your gun blade and an aeon or two in a bid to have the perfect placement for your shrine! I hope pat rewards you well. Quality photo!

Well, if blood sacrifices aren’t going to work, we can always go with burning incense. Because…the smoke will increase global warming…which will make it too hot to go outside…which will mean you’re inside…thus increasing the chances of you writing. That’s right people. I’m entirely willing to accelerate the potential destruction of our entire bio-system, provided it makes book two come out faster. Here’s to dedication.

Marky, that’s almost exactly what happened when I was setting up that photo. Mary J., I’ve fallen out of a helicopter once down at the airport, but it was only a three foot drop onto some concrete. Still hurt though, and I broke my phone. Poor Captain Joe. As for my tragic secret, I actually have no idea what it could be – I have so many.
