Much to my delight, something arrived in the mail today:
That’s right, I was so excited about finally holding a real-life copy of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle that I actually went outside to take a picture of it.
It was strange outside the house. Everything was very bright and green. There was some sort of fiery orb in the sky that burned me….
Seriously though, I’m so happy with how the book turned out. It’s gorgeous.
Best of all, since these boxes of books showed up today, I’ll be able to take them down to my reading near Milwaukee this Saturday.
That means if you swing by the reading, you’ll be one of the first people to hear me read the whole story. And, if you want, you can buy a copy before they’re even in stores.
The books literally just got in from the printers. So the folks at Subterranean Press are still busy processing them. That means they won’t be shipping for a little bit. But the good news is that if you haven’t ordered it yet, you still have a day or so to get free shipping.
Or you can come down to Waukesha on this Saturday and pick up a copy. Did I mention I’m doing reading and a signing there? I’m pretty sure I did.
Man, I really need to get some sleep. Even new-book excitement can’t change the fact that I’ve been up for 40 hours.
Sweet dreams everyone,
pat

Awesome to see it out, hope they eventually have it in stock locally
It probably won’t just end up on the shelf of your local store. It’s a small print run of odd sort of book. You’ll probably have to ask your local store to order it for you.
I’ve been waiting for this for months. Ever since I ordered it when you first blogged about your new book’s birth. And soon, I shall finally have it in my hands!
And the best thing about book births, no placenta or visceral fluids.
I must protest sir. Having an event in Waukesha a mere year after I moved away from that fair county is quite irritating.
But I’ll be fine, I’m sure. You make it to Madison fairly often, and once school is back in session, problems will be solved.
If I had a job that meant money and some time I would come out to the reading in a heartbeat. Alas, not even Target or McDonald’s wants to hire me. :( So no money. So no road trip. And no listening to the reading. I’m just depressing myself now.
This is happening a lot around where I live (DC area). People graduate college nowadays, and their schools’ career services either slack off or genuinely can’t find employment opportunities for its graduates. What happens is, the graduates then look for lesser-paying office or retail work, which considers them overqualified (they have no faith that a person with a college degree will stay very long, and want to hire someone who’s more likely to stay). At the same time, work they are qualified for is hard to come by, flooded with graduates and older people who lost their jobs elsewhere. Talk about up shit creek without a paddle.
It’s little comfort for being unemployed, but at least knowing that it’s not entirely your fault helps. My advice is to try a Temp Agency; they’ll take you in and test your proficiency with MS Word and Excel, take a few references for you (they can be personal if you don’t have professional references), and then you have to call them back at least once a week to see if there are any jobs available. A lot of employers looking for office workers go through temp agencies, trusting in THOSE people to do most of the hard work of hiring for them. This sort of ties back into the whole overqualified thing… hiring people is hard and long work, and they don’t want to hire someone that might leave in a few months and have to go through the whole process all over again.
I was so hyped T.T, i mean, i just approved two asignatures i thouht i was going to fail.
But now I know I might never see it here (yes I’m your mexican fan).
but, by the way CONGRATS for this!
and the last topic, PLEASE just one signing, just come once here to Mexico, and I’ll read the rest of your books without asking for anything else.
FYI I just put my order in and it gave me an ERROR message instead of confirming my order. If I had been patient enough to wait for 5 whole minutes I would have seen the confirmation email in my inbox, but unfortunately patience is not my forte. So, now I have 2 copies coming to my house, which is actually fantastic because it’s going to make a great present for a friend of mine, but I got the error message both times, so hopefully this will be a warning to anyone else who would like to keep their order to one $25 book instead of two. Ignore the ERROR, it’s a big faker.
When I ordered a few months back I did the same thing, but I had 7 copies coming. When I had seen my email the next day; I sent a message to the folks at Subterranen Press and they fixed it with no questions. They were really great about it.
Yeah, this has been happening to everyone, I think. I know it happened to me, clearly it happened to Valerie, and when Pat put the first post about pre-ordering it a lot of people had the problem as well. I just faithfully assumed everything went well and left it after one.
I have two too! Hey I’ll keep one for best. I’m a sloppy reader : )
I can’t wait for this to arrive in the mail! Do we have any kind of time frame for the shipping delay? It’s well worth the wait, but I’m antsy.
Congratuations I can’t imagine how proud you are.
The book’s cover art is eerie, yet it feels with me joy.
Yay! I cant wait to get mine! It’s a pitty the 50% extra cost for postage doesn’t go to Pat though =(
Very exciting! I’m sure that getting your book in the mail is a fantastic feeling that doesn’t quickly grow old, so congrats! I luckily got one of the special editions from Sub Press, so very excited to get it in the mail. A dark childrens book that’s not really for children sounds right up my alley.
So speaking of you and Subterranean Press…golden ticket auction information coming soon? :)
That’s some pretty awesome grass you have there.
The book is beautiful, too bad the chances are next to nothing that I’ll ever get hold of it. :(
Well crap, dude, if you insist on coming practically into my backyard on one of my rare days off and peddle your otherwise unobtainable wares right freaking here… I think I’ll wander over and say hi. It would be rude not to!
Replying to myself…
Thanks for the reading and talking and joking and signing and generally being you, Pat. It was a good time.
Here I am still pondering the whole seven words and ten words deal, then you go and casually drop a six words on top of it all. Gonna hurt myself pondering how that’ll relate… if it even does relate.
(I’m the radio-voice guy who looks like Nate.)
Oh yeah, the new book is great!
Oh man tempting tempting. I’m going home this weekend and I was supposed to be packing for my move but home is only an hour away and it would be a good opportunity to get a trade of NotW signed for my friend’s b-day (’cause yup, I’m all about the altruism) and hmm…why must you tempt me so?
Dammit Pat. Why are you making it so hard to NOT road trip to Milwaukee?? :-P
That looks beautiful Mister Pat. ‘though how you managed to survive that Evil DayStar encounter bemuses me – Congratulations on both counts!
The artwork is fantastic. Really looking forward to reading this. Gosh, you are awesome. :)
Mine is pre-ordered and set to ship August 4th (along with a biography of Tesla). Congrat, Pat – can’t wait to read it!
I ordered it like six months ago. I can’t wait to read it to my wife one night. By the way, Pat, you have nice grass. Very lush.
Man I cannot wait to get this in. It does indeed look gorgeous.
I just ordered it. Pleasure soon acquired.
I’ll be in Waukesha county the next day, and the following weekend, but unfortunately not while you’re there. Probably I’ll just stay on the lookout for something cool so I can have you sign my copy of the book when it arrives.
Hmm.. Its to bad I do not live in USA so I could come and hear you read! Will you maybe someday come to Denmark? Heh :D The book just looks incredible, and the grass! To say it better: freaking awesome! ^^ Do you know, if peoble in Europe can order it home? Hehe.. And when will it be published? (Thats what it is called when it comes out in the stores, right?)
Fiery orb? Young Patrick, I think the elders call it, “The sun.” If you haven’t spent much time in her presence, you must abase yourself before the alter of “sunscreen” before approaching her. Thus have the elders spoken.
rip
Yay for you, Mr. Fussy! Is it all black and white or colored?
…the contrast of the grass against the book is very striking…though the shadows on the book do give it a nice touch.
Dear Pat,
Your help needed in order to settle long standing argument between me and idiot best friend.
Who is the worlds greatest detective ?
p.s. You can’t answer Abenthy or Elodin !
Any help/witticisms/sarcasm greatly appreciated.
I would love to pick up a copy but I’m really close to being house poor and can’t afford it right now. Unfortunatly I don’t think its something that my local library is going to have available :(
I wish I could be at the reading! Is there any chance it might be webcasted?
I know the book is not kid friendly. How not kid-friendly? Like, I shouldn’t bring my 8 year old to this? I should bring her and let her play her Nintendo DS? It’ll be fine?
Up for 40hours??????????????????????????????
Ugh!
When I skip sleep for one night, as odd as that is, I feel like there’s cotton in my eyes, my head aches and feels numb at the same time, and my body is so sluggish and uncomfortable that I imagine it must be how Zombie’s feel with those staggering first—- infinite steps.
Perhaps you just take it better?
Even with coffee I still feel like shit, except that I’m a little bit more alert to feel just how shitty I feel.
Something to keep you awake while you read the book!

And yes I am sorry but I have to share the world cup frenzy since I haven’t seen you post on it :(
HA, very funny! That is great. I have adapted to the vuvuzela so I think I could sleep anyway.
That is one of the most horrible noises ever. Thanks :-)
Seeing that makes me regret moving out of Milwaukee. I’d love to come see one of your readings some time, but I live out west now. :^(
this is awesome! never been on a blog before
Congrats!
Eagerly awaiting my own copy!
I hope my continental handicap will not result in too much of a delay…
Congrats Pat, the book looks awesome, and it looks especially cool with the shadows the grass makes over it.
PS: I checked the FAQ , and you haven’t posted the release date for book 2 over there, just thought you should know.
Thanks. I’ll send that to the website people now….
Milwaukee eh ? I’m curious Pat, do you drive a motorcycle ? The beard would look great in the wind behind a set of ape hangers on a ball shaker :)
Pat,
I know you and Subterranean Press are not one and the same, but I’ve been having problems with them, and I can’t seem to contact them to sort this out. You see, when I went to order the book, it kept giving me an internal server error. I tried several times, but it simply would not work.
Later, I checked my email to discover three confirmation emails for three separate orders. As much as I love your work, I do not wish to pay for three copies of your book, as I am rather low on cash right now.
So, I tried to contact them to cancel two of the orders, but to no avail. They have no number to call, and when I try to email them, yahoo informs me that this email address does not exist.
Help? :(
hey, I had this error too, don’t respond using the email address the confirmation was sent by. you have to use the contact email from the website – just give them the two order numbers you’d like to cancel and your name (and explain about the error) and they’ll send you back an email saying no problem. The contact email is [email protected]
best of luck!
What’s the story about? If you allready said it, sry i missed

Dear Pat:
AHHHHHHHH!
JUST GOT THE SUBTERRANEAN EMAIL SAYING THEY BE SHIPPING!!!!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! :D
I just checked my email and I saw it too. Was wondering if I’d beat anyone to the post. Anyways I’m so ready to read A kids book not really meant for kids. Just up my alley =)
I bought a copy this last weekend for my aunt, a retired high school English teacher. She’ll love it.
Thank you Mr. Rothfuss
Does anyone know when the limited editions that were ordered were going to ship? From what it sounds like they’ve only mentioned the normal versions being printed and starting to ship.
Hi Pat! I just finished devouring The Name of the Wind, and I wanted to say thank you for writing such an enthralling book! It was recommended to me by my brother – which is quite a feat. He hasn’t read a novel… well… ever, I don’t think. I don’t know how he got a hold of your book, but to getting him to read anything but a graphic novel is incredible! My whole family was shocked when they heard that he had not only read it, but was telling anyone with ears and eyes to read it (and I guess if they don’t have eyes they could have it read to them? Or maybe you have an audio book, or braille version).
And personally, I loved it. All I can say is that I can, yes, CAN, wait for the second book, because I know that time you take is leading towards something just as good, or possibly better, than the first novel. Something like that is worth waiting for.
I also wanted to ask you about The Adventures. I am looking to buy a copy off of Subterranean Press, and am wondering if the copies they are selling will be signed – or if I would be able to send you the copy I purchase to have it signed. I wouldn’t even mind if the H gets a little freaky with the F (although I just tried to purchase it and there was some server error – now I’m concerned… I’ll try again…)
Again, thanks so much Pat for an amazing novel
-Mallory
Just got my copy. *spoiler alert*
the “third ending” was not there…or am I just not getting it?
I was on the late end of shipping. I got my copy this weekend. LOVE IT. Absolutely love it. Thank you.
