A New Addition to the Family

Much to my delight, something arrived in the mail today:

(Click to Embiggen.)

That’s right, I was so excited about finally holding a real-life copy of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle that I actually went outside to take a picture of it.

It was strange outside the house. Everything was very bright and green. There was some sort of fiery orb in the sky that burned me….

Seriously though, I’m so happy with how the book turned out. It’s gorgeous.

Best of all, since these boxes of books showed up today, I’ll be able to take them down to my reading near Milwaukee this Saturday.

That means if you swing by the reading, you’ll be one of the first people to hear me read the whole story. And, if you want, you can buy a copy before they’re even in stores.

The books literally just got in from the printers. So the folks at Subterranean Press are still busy processing them. That means they won’t be shipping for a little bit. But the good news is that if you haven’t ordered it yet, you still have a day or so to get free shipping.

Or you can come down to Waukesha on this Saturday and pick up a copy. Did I mention I’m doing reading and a signing there? I’m pretty sure I did.

Man, I really need to get some sleep. Even new-book excitement can’t change the fact that I’ve been up for 40 hours.

Sweet dreams everyone,

pat

Awesome to see it out, hope they eventually have it in stock locally

It probably won’t just end up on the shelf of your local store. It’s a small print run of odd sort of book. You’ll probably have to ask your local store to order it for you.

I’ve been waiting for this for months. Ever since I ordered it when you first blogged about your new book’s birth. And soon, I shall finally have it in my hands!

And the best thing about book births, no placenta or visceral fluids.

I must protest sir. Having an event in Waukesha a mere year after I moved away from that fair county is quite irritating.

But I’ll be fine, I’m sure. You make it to Madison fairly often, and once school is back in session, problems will be solved.

If I had a job that meant money and some time I would come out to the reading in a heartbeat. Alas, not even Target or McDonald’s wants to hire me. :( So no money. So no road trip. And no listening to the reading. I’m just depressing myself now.

This is happening a lot around where I live (DC area). People graduate college nowadays, and their schools’ career services either slack off or genuinely can’t find employment opportunities for its graduates. What happens is, the graduates then look for lesser-paying office or retail work, which considers them overqualified (they have no faith that a person with a college degree will stay very long, and want to hire someone who’s more likely to stay). At the same time, work they are qualified for is hard to come by, flooded with graduates and older people who lost their jobs elsewhere. Talk about up shit creek without a paddle.

It’s little comfort for being unemployed, but at least knowing that it’s not entirely your fault helps. My advice is to try a Temp Agency; they’ll take you in and test your proficiency with MS Word and Excel, take a few references for you (they can be personal if you don’t have professional references), and then you have to call them back at least once a week to see if there are any jobs available. A lot of employers looking for office workers go through temp agencies, trusting in THOSE people to do most of the hard work of hiring for them. This sort of ties back into the whole overqualified thing… hiring people is hard and long work, and they don’t want to hire someone that might leave in a few months and have to go through the whole process all over again.

FYI I just put my order in and it gave me an ERROR message instead of confirming my order. If I had been patient enough to wait for 5 whole minutes I would have seen the confirmation email in my inbox, but unfortunately patience is not my forte. So, now I have 2 copies coming to my house, which is actually fantastic because it’s going to make a great present for a friend of mine, but I got the error message both times, so hopefully this will be a warning to anyone else who would like to keep their order to one $25 book instead of two. Ignore the ERROR, it’s a big faker.

When I ordered a few months back I did the same thing, but I had 7 copies coming. When I had seen my email the next day; I sent a message to the folks at Subterranen Press and they fixed it with no questions. They were really great about it.

Yeah, this has been happening to everyone, I think. I know it happened to me, clearly it happened to Valerie, and when Pat put the first post about pre-ordering it a lot of people had the problem as well. I just faithfully assumed everything went well and left it after one.

Congratuations I can’t imagine how proud you are.

Very exciting! I’m sure that getting your book in the mail is a fantastic feeling that doesn’t quickly grow old, so congrats! I luckily got one of the special editions from Sub Press, so very excited to get it in the mail. A dark childrens book that’s not really for children sounds right up my alley.

So speaking of you and Subterranean Press…golden ticket auction information coming soon? :)

      Replying to myself…

Thanks for the reading and talking and joking and signing and generally being you, Pat. It was a good time.

Here I am still pondering the whole seven words and ten words deal, then you go and casually drop a six words on top of it all. Gonna hurt myself pondering how that’ll relate… if it even does relate.

(I’m the radio-voice guy who looks like Nate.)

Oh yeah, the new book is great!

Fiery orb? Young Patrick, I think the elders call it, “The sun.” If you haven’t spent much time in her presence, you must abase yourself before the alter of “sunscreen” before approaching her. Thus have the elders spoken.

    Ugh!

When I skip sleep for one night, as odd as that is, I feel like there’s cotton in my eyes, my head aches and feels numb at the same time, and my body is so sluggish and uncomfortable that I imagine it must be how Zombie’s feel with those staggering first—- infinite steps.

Perhaps you just take it better?

Even with coffee I still feel like shit, except that I’m a little bit more alert to feel just how shitty I feel.

    Pat,

I know you and Subterranean Press are not one and the same, but I’ve been having problems with them, and I can’t seem to contact them to sort this out. You see, when I went to order the book, it kept giving me an internal server error. I tried several times, but it simply would not work.
Later, I checked my email to discover three confirmation emails for three separate orders. As much as I love your work, I do not wish to pay for three copies of your book, as I am rather low on cash right now.

So, I tried to contact them to cancel two of the orders, but to no avail. They have no number to call, and when I try to email them, yahoo informs me that this email address does not exist.

    Help? :(

    • Mallory
      Posted June 26, 2010 at 6:25 PM | Permalink

hey, I had this error too, don’t respond using the email address the confirmation was sent by. you have to use the contact email from the website – just give them the two order numbers you’d like to cancel and your name (and explain about the error) and they’ll send you back an email saying no problem. The contact email is [email protected]

      best of luck!

Hi Pat! I just finished devouring The Name of the Wind, and I wanted to say thank you for writing such an enthralling book! It was recommended to me by my brother – which is quite a feat. He hasn’t read a novel… well… ever, I don’t think. I don’t know how he got a hold of your book, but to getting him to read anything but a graphic novel is incredible! My whole family was shocked when they heard that he had not only read it, but was telling anyone with ears and eyes to read it (and I guess if they don’t have eyes they could have it read to them? Or maybe you have an audio book, or braille version).

And personally, I loved it. All I can say is that I can, yes, CAN, wait for the second book, because I know that time you take is leading towards something just as good, or possibly better, than the first novel. Something like that is worth waiting for.

I also wanted to ask you about The Adventures. I am looking to buy a copy off of Subterranean Press, and am wondering if the copies they are selling will be signed – or if I would be able to send you the copy I purchase to have it signed. I wouldn’t even mind if the H gets a little freaky with the F (although I just tried to purchase it and there was some server error – now I’m concerned… I’ll try again…)

Again, thanks so much Pat for an amazing novel
