I’m in a bit of a rush today, so today we’re going to have miscellanea. A sort of link salad, if you will.
First off, I did a podcast with the folks over at Fictional Frontiers. I dimly remember using the word “buggery” somewhere in this interview, though I may be making that up….
Second off, over on his blog, Jim Hines recently did a parody/tribute to “Baby Got Back” called “Baby Got Books” wherin he states in no uncertain terms that he likes girls with big books. And boys with big books, for that matter. NOTW gets a flattering nod.
The Onion’s AV CLUB did an article called The Pleasures and Perils of Long-Running Fantasy Series that I thought was pretty interesting.
I’ll be doing a signing down near Madison on the 7th, in Waunakee, to be specific. I’m thinking of reading a piece of a novella I’m working on, and since a couple people have e-mailed me, asking if I can bring t-shirts, I might throw a bunch of them into the trunk of my car before I head down there.
The library is asking that you RSVP online if you’re thinking of attending.
And lastly, a piece of cool news. After years and years, I’m finally getting to teach a creative writing class here at UW – Stevens Point.
The guy that usually teaches fiction around here took a semester off, so they gave me a call and asked if I wanted to pinch hit. I jumped on it, as I’ve always wanted to teach creative writing.
Oh sure, I’ve done panels and workshops before. I even taught a Winterim last January. But those are short-term teaching. This is the first time I’ll get to teach fiction for a full semester. I’m excited and more than a little scared.
There are still a few seats open, if anybody’s interested….
Have a good weekend, y’all.

Time to move to Wisconsin.
I am not a writer. Merely imagining writing a book makes my head hurt. let alone writing something to the scale of KK Chronicles. as well as singing’s, interviews, eating sandwich’s, being a father, and now teaching. You are an impressive man Mr Rothfuss
I met someone a party that went to Stevens Point, I told them one of my favorite authors taught there, turns out she had you for English. She thought you were “weird”.
:0)
Congrats on the teaching gig! I´m sure you´ll be smashing. You very probably will not end a single lecture on time, but they´ll forgive you. ;-)
Hi! I don’t ñnow if you’ve already received this, but I saw it today on a blog I follow and thought you’d like to see it. Take a look at number 18.. congrats! http://youthandfuckery.tumblr.com/post/9674814123/nprs-top-100-sci-fi-fantasy-books
I’ve gone out and bought some of the books on the list that I’ve not got around to reading yet, just starting Dune, so thanks :D

Hey Pat, I live in Waunakee and I’m really looking forward to you coming. I’m confused though: here you say September 9th but the library is saying September 7th.
I’m pretty sure it’s the 7th–that’s what it says on Pat’s Facebook page. I work on the 8th, though, so I’m o.k. either way. . .
Sorry about the confusion, it really is the 7th and we’ve fixed it now!
Thank you for the links. The article about long-running series was very interesting. Especially this concept: “[Books] develop as much in the act of being written as they do in the planning. With a standalone, that’s not a problem; the writer can do a rough draft, work out the problems, and then publish once he or she is ready. But by publishing each entry in his series separately, before the others are complete, [authors are], in a sense, putting out a rough draft for the public. That makes it impossible for him to go back and fix anything.” I think it’s something that readers can often take for granted. We are along for a ride in real-time, so you can’t always blame an author who hits a bump in the road or finds out their route isn’t quite as direct or smooth as they originally planned. You know that going in, I think.
Which brings me to an interesting concept I came to when reading the article – the possible existence of something of a readers’ “generational gap.” At the risk of dating myself, I came of age during what could be termed the Harry Potter era. I waited through most of high school and college and beyond (I think, little fuzzy now) for my obsessed-over series to be finished. When I couldn’t get my fix in time, I joined some online forums and read other readers’ theories about the course the series was taking. In fact, this kind of activity became part of the draw of the series’ created world. So the idea that I will have to wait years for closure on a beloved plot line is pretty much accepted as part of the package. Perhaps for readers who really got into the genre earlier on, or before the internet played such a large part in fandom, this wasn’t as accepted? I have no way of knowing. But I did essentially have a, “Duh, of course you have to wait for good fiction to finish” kind of reaction while I was reading the article. ;)
That’s fantastic! I know you’ve said you miss teaching and advising, so I’m delighted you’ll be able to return to it for a semester. I only wish I could enroll!
I wonder if you and UW – Stevens Point would ever consider making the course lectures available in podcast/webcast format, as UC Berkeley, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Utah State, Tufts, and other schools have done: http://www.jimmyr.com/blog/1_Top_10_Universities_With_Free_Courses_Online.php
Dammit, I’m even in the UW system and I still couldn’t take that class! Regardless, I hope you have fun teaching, and I’m sure your students will appreciate learning from someone who sees the value in genre fiction.
Oh I hope it’s on the 9th and not the 7th; then again, the class I’d be skipping is writing, so perhaps it counts as research?
All in favor of converting Pat’s class to an online format? AYE! I wonder how many people in the class will just think he’s another weird-bearded teacher instead of the incredible (yet still weird-bearded) literary mind that he is. I bet Pat could teach a Home-Ec class and it would still be awesome :)
I go to Rice U, it’s where I’ve always dreamed of going, and now– for the first time– I regret my decision. My regret is based purely on the fact that you will be teaching a Creative Writing class at a different school. I briefly considered transferring just to take your class… I’m so jealous of your students -.-
I was in your Winterim class and I loved it. I’m very jealous that I don’t have the opportunity to take another of your classes. BTW Pat, love the blog, it’s a great read.
Yeah, I was in the winterim course too and I’m kind of mad I graduated in May now…
It’s worth noting: Pat, are you missing your first day of class to do this signing? Because that makes me giggle a little.
Can I audit the class online? Pretty pretty please?
Is there any chance that this class can be recorded and shared with those of us suffering the misfortune of not being Steven’s Point.
There’s supposed to be a question mark there.
I would also like to put in my vote for some form of online version/recording of your class. Also, since this is a miscellaneous blog, I’d like to ask a miscellaneous question (to Mr. Rothfuss but if someone else has an answer feel free to jump in); why are there no explicitly ugly people mentioned in the KK chronicles, and is that why the Amyr are so praised (for eliminating ugly from the world)? Thanks in advance.
your in my personal top 5, but 18th ..EVER.. IMPRESSIVE :)
I literally laughed out loud when I read “y’all”.
IMO English just doesn’t have enough options for second person plural. Yankee though I am, I use y’all frequently.
Being from the South myself, it’s quite built in to my vocabulary haha. I just find it funny when people who aren’t from this area use it. Mockery or not, they’re all paying a little tribute to the South every time they say it. Or at least that’s how I look at it haha.
That was a really insightful article you linked to.
The writers last line hit home for me:
"The great paradox of the long-running fantasy is that we can’t wait for a conclusion, but we never want it to end. "
Best of luck with the teaching gig …
Yeah, I liked the Onion article as well. I recently plowed through G.R.R. Martin’s ASOIAF books 1-5 and while I found them incredibly engaging, even enthralling, such that I kept turning pages and missing out on sleep and such, now that it’s been a couple of weeks since I hit those final cliffhangers. . . it’s not occupying my mind. Actually I found those books made my heart hurt. If there was an overarching theme, it seemed to be “trust no one.”
On the other hand, I’m really enjoying Jo Walton’s “insanely detailed re-read” of your books at tor.com. There’s a lot of there there. (I decided I needed to re-read your stuff after I finished A Dance With Dragons, sort of to bring back my hope in humanity.) I think you’re going to bring this baby in for a glassy smooth touchdown. I have faith (a-faith, a-faith, I gotta have fa-aith).
Zack Handlen says:
Oops, this is what he says:
“The longer a series runs, the more stacked the expectations and pressures become, and the more intimate it feels, a sort of long-distance love affair of avowed commitment and mutual assumption. We need a conclusion that will reinforce our notion of that shared reality, one that holds up to scrutiny, closes off the loose threads, delivers on whatever promises have been made, and turns a fragment into something complete.”
(Yeah, I tried for a blockquote and failed. Why is there no preview?)
He’s right, keeping a big story together is damn hard. Still, I feel like the KingKiller Chronicles are big in a deep way, as opposed to wide.
Believe me you guys, if you go to UWSP you should take this class. I took the winterim course, and it was awesome on many different levels. However, it’s definitely not a “record and listen to later” class or “online-able” class – you’ve really gotta be there.
Good luck, Pat. The prose professor taking a semester off is the best thing that could’ve happened to UWSP :D
Honestly if I was a US citizen I wouldn’t think twice about blowing my life savings to relocate for this class. As it is: Please, pretty please, record your classes.
I don’t think I am have ever desired to move to Wisconsin (in fact, I was a touch unsure of the correct spelling of “Wisconsin” for a moment), but today that all changed.
I wish I lived there, wish I could take this class.
But seeing as how Los Angeles must remain my home for a little while longer, I will have to content myself with my local community college writing teachers.
Good luck Pat! Have fun!
*sigh* I guess I just have to face up to it. As much as I may wish it to be otherwise… Patrick Rothfuss is not my bitch.
It would be kind of funny if none of your students knew who you were…
Man, I just graduated from UWSP and NotW came out right before I started there. I got gipped out of some Rothfuss-ness.
I am waiting for your book to come out in German, and I just had a thought.
Next time, when the third book comes out, you have to make t-shirts saying: “See, I’ve got The Book. Now please just go away.”
Because I am definetely gonna need one when I don’t want my friends to disturb while I am reading!!
All right, I’m transferring.
Is there any chance to film your classes and upload them in Youtube?
There is nothing that I enjoy more than a really good teacher explaining their subjects, be it physics, sociology, chemistry, etc.
Bump for great justice.
Just wanted to thank you for your impeccable writing, a true wordsmith!!!
Hope new Kvothe story coming soon. Frankly the best book(s) I have EVER read. Mr Castaneda’s books were beautiful, but you have exceeded (in my humble opinion) him by far. Thank you again for really “bringing it”!!!!
RECORD AND UPLOAD IT, NO EXCUSES.
Yea, any chance those could get put online?
Yes! Podcast please!! :D
So uhhh, do they have a list of students? Because Jimmy may end up in the broom closet, and I may have to practice my impersonation skills. Seriously, I hope these kids know exactly how honored they are.
Oi Pat, this is Nate from Italy. I’ve just gone through your faq’s and, if I got everything right, apparently this is pretty much the only “place” available to let you know that it took me only 5 days to finish “Il Nome Del Vento” (“The Name Of The Wind”). And, of course I totally loved it. No criticism from me, only praise an’all, mate. Also, I got “La Paura Del Saggio” (“The Wiseman’s Fear”) this afternoon… 1140 pages there. Well, considering the 730 pages of the previous book, it should take me roughly 8 days to finish the bastard. Well, this is it. You got yourself a new fan, mate. Ok, I’ll sign off here. Have a good one.
Nice. the pleasures & perils link’s great.
Wish I could take your class. Unfortunately, I have responsibilities here in Joplin.
Thanks for sharing.
Great article on the pleasures and perils…
There is unique aspect of the King Killer Chronicle, at least at this point in the game. If you were to say to your fans, “I’m sorry folks, looks like this series is going take 5 books to finish”. There would be a unified rumbling of geeks’ cross the nation jumping for joy.
So, Pat’s class next spring, then off to U Maine for an English class with Stephen King in the Fall of ’12. Out-of-state tuition is going to kill me this year…
Huh. I saw ‘the Onion’ and expected some sort of sarcastic parody. Instead I read something serious and thoughtful.
FTR, writers *are* our (‘our’ being ‘the readers’) bitches. We’re the employers. Annoy us enough and we’ll just stop reading. Not just ours either – also the editors, the marketers, etc. Writers gotta bend over for an awful lot of people for very little reward (not just book authors, but writers for shows, etc) – one of many reasons I would never want to be one even did I have the talent.
I do have to admit – George R. R. Martian started to annoy me starting a couple years before the book before this one came out. There’s a difference between ‘having a life’ and ‘not doing your job’ and it looked more and more like the later the longer it went on. I vacillated between being horrified by the rabid fans and feeling like if it took me this long to finish my projects at work, I’d be fired.
The book was released, and it left me wishing he’d just taken some years off without promising anything to the fans. At that point I realized I was starting to care in the ‘creepy rabid fan’ way and stopped following progress on the next book at all, and was pleasantly surprised later when I found out Dance With Dragons had just been released. I read it and was *much* happier than with the last, though reading some reviews after… wow, those are some *bitter* fans :/
I found out my sister (who has NEVER been a reader or a geek) has been following the TV show (she didn’t even know it was based on books, if that gives you an idea), so I gave her the books and started watching it with her. The show is *excellent* and I’m happy that he took time out to help work out details, and I *finally* got my sister to read! Maybe next I’ll get her interested in some Sanderson or Rothfuss…
Deariest Patrick,
Have you ever seen the film Nacho Libre? If so, please comment.
Censorially,
Dedos
I’ve been refreshing this page for days hoping for the next blog post. As it is, I’ve settled for going out and buying books from the list mentioned above, not a bad substitute, finally reading Dune : )
Well thats pretty awesome. But instead of teaching there you should come teach at Lehigh. I’m an engineer but i’d take your class in a millisecond. Dude you could totally bunk at my apartment with my roommates, don’t worry we’d cut you some slack on the rent. So .Yeah let me know when you wanna move in, if you wanna see pictures of the house you can always email me at [email protected].
nevermind
Hey Pat,
This is my first post on this blog
This month Wise Man’s Fear is about to being released in Portugal
http://1001mundos.blogs.sapo.pt/23567.html
– 21 September
I hope you see this link :)
Actually, what is says is that it will be released in two parts. The first part comes out this month and the second part comes out in November. It also says the book will be 1400 pages (a full 40% more than the English version). I would be fascinated to know the reason for such a phenomenon. Maybe some literary quirk of the translator? I’ve read books in Portuguese before, and I’ve never noticed such a drastic surcharge in pages due to translation.
The problem is to make a book of 1400 pages it would cost almost same as two books (in Portugal a book has almost 40% higher in price than in Usa for example), cause it would need some special cover to dont fall upon is size, so the option to people keep buying it and dont go into the english versions is split it in two parts.
The first part have 704 pages, and the second will have a bit more, is not the best way to solve the problem, but is the only way. The publishers of the book in Portugal have to follow the standard configurantion of their colection, this book, with reduced configurations is 1400 pages, it would be supose to be much more.
Most times when a book have more than 1000 pages, in Portugal, is split, cause most of us dont like to read, and if you compare with Usa, we are a lot less, so they have to find way to atract people, it is hard to please everyone, i didnt like the idea of split the book but once they told me the reasons i knew that it was the only way.
It may be sad to say this, but books here have an average of 1000 per edition, knowing that Name of the Wind is only in second edition here you may understand the problem of the situation.
Sorry about my english*
Se quiseres, podes escrever em Português. Nao faz uma diferença para mim.
Curse my location on the east coast and lack of transportation!
Yeah can you please come to the east coast some time soon! Please!
Pat’s visited the East Coast (specifically, the Washington DC area where I am, along with many other locations) at least twice recently. I’m sure he’ll swing by again, have no fear.
Certo :)
Eu insisti bastante com a editora portuguesa para saber isto, não fiquei satisfeito com a decisão, mas pronto..
“I’m excited and more than a little scared.”
Oh please, you’ll be great! Just make sure you don’t ask someone in the class to give a demonstration. And if you must ask someone to give a demonstration, don’t let them ask for a piece of your hair first. No good can come of that.
….taps foot impatiently,,, stop with the teaching and get back to blog’in. I need my fix.
Obviously it ‘s up to Pat as to whether or not he posts, I just hope that he and his family are okay. A quick “I’m busy but okay”, or something along those lines, would be much appreciated.
He still updates his facebook regularly, so I’m sure he’s just dandy.
That is good to hear. Some fans avoid facebook, so we don’t have any way of knowing about what he does there.
Facebook is ridiculous.
What I meant to say:
Facebook is ridiculous. I only use it to keep up with what my family is up to, otherwise, I wouldn’t bother.
Patrick is our monkey, and he must dance for us! DANCE MONKEY.
Completely unrelated, but in my desperate attempts to find a copy of NotW in Korean (available for purchase in the states), I found Kvothe’s prologue written out in Korean Hangul. It is a mostly direct translation, and pretty badass I think. There are some annoying roman characters, but other than that, check it out.
wow, I ran it through a language converter and this is how it comes out… a bit nuts how it translates directly!
My name is Kvothe. I am the king sleep, Lena has stolen the princess in the back. I burned the town of Trebon. I spent the night with Felurian my spirit and all of my life remain. I talk during the day, I’m afraid other people step on the path in the moonlight in. Most people allowed at a younger age was expelled from the University. I have minstrels to sing a song, God loves you and has written the story of a woman. For me, you may be
Haha, that is hilarious. “I talk during the day.” Yeah, me too. “God loves you and has written the story of a woman.” Priceless. XD
Pat Rothfuss, Pat Rothufuss, Wherefore art thou Pat Rothfuss? The days drag on to weeks yet still we see no post. If it were not for Facebook we might’ve feared the worst.
ANYWAYS…. you’ve probably got a lot on your plate Pat. I’m sure we all understand you can’t be here to entertain us every few days with your witty jokes. Hell, I bet if you posted that your using this time to work on the 3rd book no one would bother you at all until you said it was okay. Can’t wait until you have time to amuse and enlighten us with your blogs once again!
Sincerely,
Guy who misses reading your blog while on break at work
I would like to see the book in “The Big Bang Theory”. :)
Sheldon readin’ and saying “Oh, this book is excelent!!… I can’t wait to see how the author ruins the end of the story.”
Kiddin’!!! I loved The name of the wind and i’m waiting for the version in Spanish of The wise man’s fear.
Same here. Estoy a punto de acabar El Juego de Ender. This would be the first time i’ve read a book in English and Spanish. I’m hoping the wise man’s fear will be my second.
I can totally see Sheldon saying this. It’s perfect Sheldon!
So other than the fact that he should definetly be taking some down time enjoying friends and family, and writing the second book, and working with/at his creative writing class, and going to conventions and such, and sleeping, eating, and the likes, I found anothe reason why he hasn’t been online lately. And its pretty cool. And its great he’s doing it! Hope it works out!
http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/article/20110923/CWS03/309230090/Local-best-selling-author-Patrick-Rothfuss-gets-behind-downtown-project
So I’ll be the first to aknowledge that I’m a complete dipshit and still more than half a sleep. I would like to make ammends to the above post by pointing out that he should be writing the THIRD book not the second, and I forgot to put th ‘r’ on the end of ‘another’.
Thanks for sharing that. What a nifty-sounding project.
That’s pretty awesome. I was going to say something else, and it was going to be insightful and amazing. But then I had to log-in to do it, and on my way back down I read more comments, and totally forgot what I was going to say. *sigh*
Oh wait, there it is … Of course, right after I hit reply…
I was going to say that while reading that article, I couldn’t help but hear Felicia Day singing “My Eyes” in my head. And it’s a wonderful fit. “I believe there’s good in everybody’s heart, keep it safe and sound. With hope you can do your part to turn a life around”
Good job Pat, thanks for restoring my faith in humanity, one teeny bit at a time. :o)
I bet he’s working on the big photo contest post. He probably feels like he has to out-do his Seussical post earlier which is quite a feat in-it-of-itself.
The 30th marks the end of an academic term for me -an onerous task earmarked highly by that most ugliest of beasts: the deadline. I can’t help but feel that perhaps that self-same, doggedly selfish, impersonal beast is diligently preying upon your own sense of peace, time-management and family balance. The weighty perils of necessary procrastination weigh heavily upon us all, albeit with broader consequence to one afforded such success in the realm of NY Times bestsellers. I imagine that your pressures rival the peril of deep-sea divers given ony dixie cups for protection.
As an acolyte and fan of the highest and most reverent order, I wish you peace, control and a semblance of control that allows you to function and maintain an achievable balance betwixt happiness and success. Laugh with your boy, love with your wife, and truly live with your family.
As fans, we thirst for crumbs from your table. As peers, we feel the stress of balance and work. But as rabid fans, we cry out heartily for word of your well-being. That you haven’t graced the headlines as the latest victim of fortunes’ vile is a grace – but don’t neglect the power of a simple ‘hello’ and ‘all’s well’ to placate the adoring minions. We love the muppet – and always will. You’ve cultivated allegiance, sir – let the troops know you fare well.
Sincerest regards and wishes of peace and tranquility,
Dale T.
That made me laugh. =)
Dear Patrick,
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
Also, I miss you.
…. No homo. Is that alright to say if you’re not a rapper?
Thanks for always making me laugh, I hope your world domination plans are moving apace. Clearly the greenhouse is a massive staging area and the world should tremble and despair at the unleashed might of your forces. . HO HO HO !
Probably not, but I hope things are going well for you.
laters
Pat… are you alive???
Damn it Pat come teach at Madison!
Hi Pat,
First of all I thought you were German and it was a pleasant surprise to see you are an American (nothing against Germans as they live in the country next door to me, but…). If I would have known, I would have read your books in English instead of Dutch (it was an awesome translation though).
Lol, I had secretly hoped No. 3 was already out, but as book No. 2 was released in 2011 and No. 1 in 2007, I have a faint feeling I still have to wait a few years.
I totally, TOTALLY, enjoyed your Kvothe and the realism of him telling big stories about himself when he was young and his search of getting more “sympathie” (as the magic is being called in Dutch). By how you tell the events, I have a feeling that besides No. 3, also a No. 4 and hopefully a No. 5 will be coming out. :-)
YAY!
Patrice
(and yes, it seems I am a geekess too; Star Trek, Star Wars, I play a game online (Second Life) and I read SF/Fantasy books).
Dear Pat, It´s been almost a month since your last update. I respectfully wonder if everything is fine. I imagine many of your fans are also wondering but wouldn´t like to bother you though.
If you consider it appropiate and feel like it, would you consider saying hello?
With best hopes and apologizing in advance for the interference.
Ricardo
Hey pat, i know you love Firefly? that question mark is intentional… i think its firefly you love the old show they took off the air? i dont know if im right but i think it is one and the same. if so i hope this makes you happy: Netflix has it on their site and im just watching episode one right now here is the link
http://ca.movies.netflix.com/WiPlayer?movieid=60033036&trkid=2434768&t=Firefly%3A+The+Complete+Series
I think it’s a fairly safe bet he has Firefly on DVD.
Also, I am having a tough time reconciling myself now seeing you call it “the old show”… I think I need a beer.
Holy crap guys, give it a rest. The man is busy teaching a class, doing charity work, living life and who knows what else.
Just imagine it’s 1990 and you only hear about your favorite author when they make the news.
Yes, you’re right. Hey obsessive blog comment recheckers (and of course I am one of you, else how could I be here right now? ;-)
http://www.farmshed.org/ is the organization that Pat is supporting. They are here to encourage local food production and consumption (in the Stevens Point, central Wisconsin area) and in particular they’ve purchased a greenhouse right in downtown Stevens Point (this is what Pat made a major contribution for) that needs to be refurbished to become a center for food production, commerce and learning. You can donate here:
http://www.indiegogo.com/The-Greenhouse-Project
So, turn your energies (and dollars) to a very good cause! They need to raise some serious bucks before the snow falls. . .
For those interested, Valerie was part of the latest Writing Excuses podcast: http://www.writingexcuses.com/2011/09/25/writing-excuses-6-17-writing-assistants/
Listening to that right now. Enjoying it so far. Thank you very much for posting the link!
It’s also worth noting that he’s now teaching TWO classes – the OTHER creative writing professor is on sick leave for a month or so. I believe he found out the day of the first class.
I like knowing he’s finally getting to do something he’s always wanted.
Thanks for the information! Good news for Pat, and for the UWSP students. For blog junkies, not so much.
O.K. everybody–chill out. TWO classes, and one completely unexpected? Major time suck. Also, teaching any particular class for the first time takes far more prep time than repeat performances.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t hear much until midterms.
On another note, SOMEONE has been logging into Pat’s Deviant Art account. On an almost daily basis I might add. Now whether or not that’s him….well. Who knows. It was definetly him at one point in time. But it could just be Valerie or someone else Pat would allow to do that…
wow this place is creepy.
hey, Pat? it’s been a month now… let us know you’re still around, yeah?
Would be greatly appreciated ! ….
Everything all right?
That would be so cool to learn about writing from Pat. In all honesty, I’d sure love for him to talk more about writing here but I think he has his hands full. Hope the teaching is going well. All I know is that Fall term is kicking my ass out here in Oregon. It’s only the second week and I already feel burnt-out.
My load is:
PHIL 490 (I defy anyone to make sense of Kant but if you can, keep it to yourself)
ENGL 446
ENGL 310
GER 211 (Mark Twain was right about the German language)
Why am I grumbling?
Because I’m a disgruntled 37 year old 3rd year student at University
Anyway – I really just wanted to thank Pat for writing such a great story. I hope you can take all the time you want and need for the third book.
Takes NPR’s recent Sci-Fi/Fantasy list and turns it into a flowchart: http://i.imgur.com/WpdLE.jpg
The biggest problem I see with this chart is that Terry Goodkind’s books are not preceded by “Do you like to read absolute crap?”
That flow chart is amazing!
Stay well Mr Rothfuss. I’m looking forward to Worldbuilders this year.. Your interviews with other authors are always a highlight.
Ok I know you don’t appreciate being yelled at.
And you don’t like being pushed about Book 3.
It turns out that we are supposed to wait for ages for any news/comment. Now you don’t even show up on the blog for over a month. Hmm.
That’s not like you, is it.
Either you have an excellent reason, or you better ask anyone to say anything on your behalf. Please?
Hi Pat, it is me.
Just wanted to say goodbye, I’ll miss your humor and wit.
I’m starting to believe that this blog may be over with :( I guess I may visit
it again in a year or some sort.
Take care
He’s teaching two classes right now, time for the blog I’m sure is low on his priorities, as it should be. We’ve been a bit spoiled by his once or twice a week posting in the past. I’m sure he’ll come back once his classes are finished up. Teaching, family, book stuff; I’m sure sure he’s lacking in the free time department about now.
We could all talk about something else for a bit…which is better pat’s minions, Dr. Who or Buffy?
Take a chill pill people.
His priorities should be:
1. Family/Friends
2. Work
3. Doing stuff to relax and avoid getting stressed/burned out
4. Book 3
5. Blog
/facepalm
Pat, please ignore the idiots on this comment thread that are posting hate for your absence.
Guess what folks, even rock stars like Pat need some time away from the crazies like us. Get off his back.
Dear Mr. Rothfuss,
Is this your inspiration for the name Denna? It is from the book “A History of Iran: An Empire of the Mind” and is discussing early Zoroastrianism.
“It was a characteristic of the new religion that philosophical concepts or categories became personified as heavenly beings or entities-indeed these
seem to have proliferated, a little like characters in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. One example is the idea of the daena. According to one later text, a beautiful maiden appeared to the soul of a just man after his death. She was the personification of all the good works he had done in life.”
Dear Pat,
I really enjoyed hearing your assistant on Writing Excuses. Any chance she could start an update blog for you? You could still do the your blog when it’s fun and convenient, but it would be nice to have your events, interviews, awards, etc. posted on a more regular basis. I love your blogs and miss them, but understand you have lots going on. Still, Valerie seems awesome and it would be cool to hear from her too :)
Hope you are having a great semester!
Minion #3
Patrick,
I really loved your first two novels but now am impatiently awaiting the third. Is there an ETA on that publication in the US?
He might have one in his mind, but he hasn’t told the public an ETA for #3 yet.
And I don’t think he will anytime soon.
I’d imagine it would be at least a couple of years though, seeing as #2 came out last may (right?), at that one took 3 or 4 years to write after #1 was published.
Pat,
We know you’re busy. We get it. You have more than twice as many classes/papers/students/etc. going 0n this semester than you thought. Plus, you have a beautiful infant that should take all the time you have left over. But, you have spoiled us. Because of your usual attention and multiple posts-per-month, your minions have come to expect some sort of communication by now. We don’t need a glorious, multi-link, amazing epiphany/quirky/ironic post. We just want to know you’re alive and kickin’. A quick “Hey all – incredibly busy” type of post would be more than sufficient. At the very least, do it for the followers of yours who refuse to spend any time on the more popular social media sites.
-Graham
Folks,
I have been following (digitally, of course) Pat since early 2008, after his book hit the shelves, and I am quite certain that he only posts a blog when it is ready and complete, with a meaning and structure. Plus witty and funny.
Which takes time – to write, check, rewrite, recheck and post.
So if he hasn’t posted anything it simply means he doesn’t have the time.
I am sure this blog remains on his priority list, however there is only so many hours in a day.
Ask yourself, do you know his day to day schedule so that you can judge whether he has time or not?
Don’t take this ‘negligence’ personally, Pat will be back as soon as he can.
//Matt
p.s. Pat if you are reading this, I hope all is well with your family and work!
We miss you, Pat! Hope things are going well in your life and look forward to reading the next blog post. Don’t overwork yourself!
-Cody
Bluezone’s right. I bet when Pat posts again it’ll be well worth the wait.
I actually checked Pat’s wikipedia page to make sure nothing untoward had happened to him. He’ll be happy to know it hasn’t…
Following He without clever name’s post. Personally, I find
Doctor Who >= Buffy. Although I have to say that the sooner riversong leaves the show the better my soul will be.
Steven Moffat at the helm hasn’t really done much for me. Don’t get me wrong, Blink is one of my favorite episodes. I just feel the show needs to be more about the doctor and a pretty sidekick with her gormless boyfried hanging out in all of time and space, rather than a long-term love interest and constant cliff hangers. Didn’t enjoy that last season at all at all.
You guys are like a bunch of sweeteaters with the hunger… no blog? no blog? What if I take off my clothes and dance in the street Pat? Will you blog then? Pretty Pleaaaaaase?!?!
Although I do have to admit the silence was making me worry a bit, but I’m sure Oot and school and book and Worldbuilders 2011… it’s almost time again! have him sufficiently occupied.
I just hope he’s sequestered himself somewhere in the woods and is doing epic revisions on book 3 (in the small amount of time when not teaching and daddy..ing.)
Pat. I typically do not read a lot of fantasy, although I am a voracious reader, consuming about 4-5 books a month. Borders was closing in August and I saw your book The Name of the Wind on the table. I bought it. Five, nights later I finished it. Nothing was done in my hone for those days. All I did was read. Fantastic book, the writing, the imagery the story, all there. I wanted the second book, and lo and behold, it was there also. How lucky was that? I did not have to wait 4 years to read it. Almost like waiting for Ken Follett’s World without End. Saying, I was very happily reading your new book, A Wise Man’s Fear, is an understatement, but Read incessantly. Loved The name of the Wind. Read it in 5 days straight. Had to stop and walk the dog and cook for my husband. Very impressed. loved the book, and was thrilled that the second book was already published. Am now 58% through the book. Could not put it down, but, upon reading Kvothe’s retelling of the Golden Screw story, I had to stop reading for a while. Really thinking this over…Was THAT story REALLY necessary? Either it’s a private joke, or just lowered you a lot in my hero worship scale. It was just so out of place in this story. I was disappointed that you for some reason reverted to its use. I will continue reading. I still love Kvothe as do all your readers, am tired of being in the woods with the mercenaries and hope we leave soon. But please, NO MORE Golden Screw stories, that is beneath you.
The thing is though, I don’t think it was Pat’s intention for there to be too much hero worship around Kvothe by the readers. Well, maybe it’s not putting it right, but we’re meant to be seeing the ‘back stage pass’ to the life of a hero, warts and all. And that Golden Screw story is just some teenagers having a joke, as teenagers do. It’s a nice little reminder of Kvothe’s age at that point in the story, and also a good example of Pat showing you that Kvothe isn’t just some epic hero, he is also a teenager who says stupid things and jokes around with his university mates.
Yes. Also, it’s funny.
really really funny! i mean, his ass fell off…
I laughed my ass off when I read it…..
I don’t know about everyone else here but for the golden screw story was very telling about what would happen to Kvothe. Like the boy with the golden screw he is searching for this answer, finds it, and it ends kind of badly. More importantly is that Kvothe knows this story but does not see the revelation in it, one that is pointed out to him throughout the book the second book i think. he must open his eyes and look at what he is doing before he regrets it. Of course we know he does not.
patrick rothfuss i hope you are working on the book right now, if so i could go for months without a blog post…. a year even…
I’m hoping that your prolonged absence means either a) you are writing like a fiend, or b) you are relaxing with the family, enjoying the fall, and not worrying about fans who wonder why you haven’t posted for so long. Either way is good.
My workday has become a little darker since you stopped posting, Mr. Rothfuss. DARK INDEED.
I have to agree, my day’s do seem a little darker than when Pat was among us blogging and filling our lives with intreasting facts.
Pat, we would like to know if you are still alive. Your loyal fans worry about you when you don’t tell us if you’re alive for such an extended period of time.
Dearest Mr. Rothfuss,
Please don’t EVER title another blog post “A few links….”
I have dreaded seeing that title for over a month now.
Day after day, i click my bookmark for your website.
I used to click it with joy and great anticipation.
Now i feel a lingering dread as i see the main page load on my screen.
Every day, i hesitantly hover over the “Pat’s Blog” link.
I hold my breath and squeeze my eyes shut as tightly as i can.
A few seconds pass before i gather up the courage … my finger muscles twitch ever so slightly before i hear the distinct “click” of my mouse.
It sounds like a gunshot to me.
All at once, a thousand thoughts rush through my mind …
“Is there a new post? Will today be the day? Is it the same thing again? I know he is busy, but is he THAT busy?really? Doesnt he know we miss him? I hate that we have become so dependant on his writings and i like that much more for it. I’m so happy that he got those teaching gigs. I hope he is spending a boatload of time with Oot and family. Did’nt my wife ask me to pick something up on the way home? What the hell am i going to make for dinner tonight? Damn, i forgot to stop at the store on my way home … ill just have to run out later. Ok i need to stop sitting here with my eyes closed and ishouldprobablystopholdingmybreathnowasi’mstartingtogetalittlelightheaded … OK it’s time to look”
I ever so slowly open one eye (and take a deep breath) … and there it is, coming into focus.
“A few links…”
I squeeze my eyes shut again to hold back a tear.
I do not wish to ever see it again.
So, pretty pretty please, with euphonious sugar on top.
Thanks much and hope to hear from you soon
…cringe
Holy crap.
Uh… yeah… what he said! … Damn that was good…
Wow. You take the cake for most patronising post here. I think what you thought was euphonious sugar was just a sickly sweet and rather drab attempt at emotional blackmail.
Why can’t you just wish him well and let him make decisions about what he does? Seriously, you sound like a small child who hasn’t been given free sweets from the friendly shop-owner for a while and is throwing a tantrum.
Peace out.
Just checkin to see if your alive, hope everythings going well. I’m in school as well right now taking a Creative Writing class, too bad its not yours :(
hope to hear from you soon~
Checked Pat’s facebook (the one me made where it was just a normal profile rather than a group. He still uses that one occasionally.)
Someone put a post on his wall saying:
“Now has TWO books signed by Pat Rothfuss :) He was giving a lecture on “Why Fantasy Matters” :) Funny things he said during the lecture to come later, hehe. And he remembered the lesbian unicorns and my name :D”
So I think it’s safe to assume he’s just busy with teaching rather than having any issues with family. Lets let the man breath a little now! We can be patient.
P.S. Sorry to whoever’s post that was on his wall, I’m not a stalker, I’M NOT!
We miss you sooooooooo much!!! that much, but more!!! ^^
It seems like the last couple years provide a pretty solid indicator that he likes to blog. He’s kept up with it well past the point in his career when it could be explicable as an audience building strategy, and he was from the start putting more vim into it than that motivation alone could likely have accounted for.
Those who are demanding re: needing updates should know that, despite good wishes, you are in all probability exerting some level of pressure on him to detach from the kind of engagement with fans that this blog has long represented. I’m not suggesting that pressure would be sufficient to keep the blog stopped, I’m just saying the attempt to make posting into a heavy obligation fraught with the management of your distress likely places what weight you are contributing to the situation squarely on the side of the scales labeled “stop posting” not on the side labeled “post merrily”.
Besides, he’s doing a new job, teaching creative writing, which he’s indicated had long been a goal of his, and he probably is taking that pretty seriously. And, since we know the author is all characters in the book (or is that dreams?) we can draw many valid conclusions about things his days are now especially filled with:
1. Doubling students’ tuition when they answer questions incorrectly.
2. Refusing medical care to students that lie.
3. Having some of his most talented and independently minded students somehow heat his leg to an uncomfortable extent.
4. “Throwing” students off of roofs.
5. Vigorously enforcing his institutions’ policy regarding candles.
6. Being particularly smart and bearded.
I’m missing many examples (some help?), but in any case those things are all hard work, and that’s part of the picture. But the other part is, again, while he has many, he also doesn’t need any good excuses to not blog more posts than strike his fancy. All respect to missing the posts, they are often very nice, but try not to muddy his fancy.
I love #5; I bet UW does have a candle policy, or one regarding open flames, anyhow.
Ah yes – page 20. You can have decorative candles in your dorm room as long as the wick has not been burned, burning candles being prohibited. But forget about candles – check out page 24: “Individuals who need to clean deer or other large game must make arrangements to do so off campus.” BUT you can clean small game or fish in specially designated campus kitchens! I do not remember gutting small animals being part of my undergraduate experience, but maybe it would have been enriching. . .
I live in Stevens Point. Mind if I drop by your class to listen some days when I’m not working? Or would I have to register?
OMG still no post from Pat whatever will I do? I know I’ll read all of the over exagerated post that have started becoming ammusing in their own right.
Pat, keep up with molding the minds of future authors and being a dad, come back to us when you fell like it.
In the newsletter from Pat’s german publisher it said today that his european book tour has been cancelled and more info could be found here, which is apparently not the case. I am a bit worried.
The World Fantasy Convention appearance also seems to have been canceled (at least, he’s not listed as a guest of honor). I’m also worried – I really hope everything is okay with Pat and his family and friends.
Another follow-up:
http://www.abc.nl/blog/?p=24343 states that his European visit was canceled due to “personal circumstances.” :(
Today the first part of “The wise mans fear” came out in the german translation. Yes, indeed…the first part. In German they had to cut it into two parts of 860 and 520 pages… roundabout 1380 pages of text in total.
The english bound edition had about 1008 if i remember right.
So now I finally can reread the book in my mother tongue.^^
I hope Mr. Rothfuss is alright and everyone precious to him too. This silence is strange and makes me worry…
I am really sorry for your dad. That must be really hard on you.
My best wishes to you and your family.
I think that your comment is inappropriate since Patrick asked us not to. It’s inappropriate also that I’m responding to this but I would ask that no one else mention anything about this or reply to it.
I feel like a moron right now.
You see, I heard the news via a friend on Facebook, and I went directly here to post this comment.
It’s only after that I realised Patrick had posted a new blog entry, in which he explicitly told us not to post the kind of comment I had just posted.
I tried to remove mine, but I can’t.
So I would really appreciate it if the Powers That Be could do that for me.
I feel kind of bad right now, sorry for the inconvenience.
I wouldn’t worry yourself about it, worst thing that’ll happen will be pat will personally come to your house and kick your ass, which would be kinda cool.
I’d be so happy if pat came to my house, even if it was to beat my face in.
And maybe there could be shirts that say:
“Pawed By the Bearded”
I know, I know – sorry :)
I tried to show to Patrick the portuguese version of the book, since it looks like he didin´t even knew about it, then, after long time trying the book came out, if someone can make him see this i would apreciate
Thanks
