A few links….

I’m in a bit of a rush today, so today we’re going to have miscellanea. A sort of link salad, if you will.

First off, I did a podcast with the folks over at Fictional Frontiers. I dimly remember using the word “buggery” somewhere in this interview, though I may be making that up….

Second off, over on his blog, Jim Hines recently did a parody/tribute to “Baby Got Back” called “Baby Got Books” wherin he states in no uncertain terms that he likes girls with big books. And boys with big books, for that matter. NOTW gets a flattering nod.

The Onion’s AV CLUB did an article called The Pleasures and Perils of Long-Running Fantasy Series that I thought was pretty interesting.

I’ll be doing a signing down near Madison on the 7th, in Waunakee, to be specific. I’m thinking of reading a piece of a novella I’m working on, and since a couple people have e-mailed me, asking if I can bring t-shirts, I might throw a bunch of them into the trunk of my car before I head down there.

The library is asking that you RSVP online if you’re thinking of attending.

And lastly, a piece of cool news. After years and years, I’m finally getting to teach a creative writing class here at UW – Stevens Point.

The guy that usually teaches fiction around here took a semester off, so they gave me a call and asked if I wanted to pinch hit. I jumped on it, as I’ve always wanted to teach creative writing.

Oh sure, I’ve done panels and workshops before. I even taught a Winterim last January. But those are short-term teaching. This is the first time I’ll get to teach fiction for a full semester. I’m excited and more than a little scared.

There are still a few seats open, if anybody’s interested….

Have a good weekend, y’all.

I am not a writer. Merely imagining writing a book makes my head hurt. let alone writing something to the scale of KK Chronicles. as well as singing’s, interviews, eating sandwich’s, being a father, and now teaching. You are an impressive man Mr Rothfuss

Thank you for the links. The article about long-running series was very interesting. Especially this concept: “[Books] develop as much in the act of being written as they do in the planning. With a standalone, that’s not a problem; the writer can do a rough draft, work out the problems, and then publish once he or she is ready. But by publishing each entry in his series separately, before the others are complete, [authors are], in a sense, putting out a rough draft for the public. That makes it impossible for him to go back and fix anything.” I think it’s something that readers can often take for granted. We are along for a ride in real-time, so you can’t always blame an author who hits a bump in the road or finds out their route isn’t quite as direct or smooth as they originally planned. You know that going in, I think.

Which brings me to an interesting concept I came to when reading the article – the possible existence of something of a readers’ “generational gap.” At the risk of dating myself, I came of age during what could be termed the Harry Potter era. I waited through most of high school and college and beyond (I think, little fuzzy now) for my obsessed-over series to be finished. When I couldn’t get my fix in time, I joined some online forums and read other readers’ theories about the course the series was taking. In fact, this kind of activity became part of the draw of the series’ created world. So the idea that I will have to wait years for closure on a beloved plot line is pretty much accepted as part of the package. Perhaps for readers who really got into the genre earlier on, or before the internet played such a large part in fandom, this wasn’t as accepted? I have no way of knowing. But I did essentially have a, “Duh, of course you have to wait for good fiction to finish” kind of reaction while I was reading the article. ;)

That’s fantastic! I know you’ve said you miss teaching and advising, so I’m delighted you’ll be able to return to it for a semester. I only wish I could enroll!

I wonder if you and UW – Stevens Point would ever consider making the course lectures available in podcast/webcast format, as UC Berkeley, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Utah State, Tufts, and other schools have done: http://www.jimmyr.com/blog/1_Top_10_Universities_With_Free_Courses_Online.php

Oh I hope it’s on the 9th and not the 7th; then again, the class I’d be skipping is writing, so perhaps it counts as research?

Yeah, I liked the Onion article as well. I recently plowed through G.R.R. Martin’s ASOIAF books 1-5 and while I found them incredibly engaging, even enthralling, such that I kept turning pages and missing out on sleep and such, now that it’s been a couple of weeks since I hit those final cliffhangers. . . it’s not occupying my mind. Actually I found those books made my heart hurt. If there was an overarching theme, it seemed to be “trust no one.”

On the other hand, I’m really enjoying Jo Walton’s “insanely detailed re-read” of your books at tor.com. There’s a lot of there there. (I decided I needed to re-read your stuff after I finished A Dance With Dragons, sort of to bring back my hope in humanity.) I think you’re going to bring this baby in for a glassy smooth touchdown. I have faith (a-faith, a-faith, I gotta have fa-aith).

Oops, this is what he says:

“The longer a series runs, the more stacked the expectations and pressures become, and the more intimate it feels, a sort of long-distance love affair of avowed commitment and mutual assumption. We need a conclusion that will reinforce our notion of that shared reality, one that holds up to scrutiny, closes off the loose threads, delivers on whatever promises have been made, and turns a fragment into something complete.”

(Yeah, I tried for a blockquote and failed. Why is there no preview?)

He’s right, keeping a big story together is damn hard. Still, I feel like the KingKiller Chronicles are big in a deep way, as opposed to wide.

And, of course I totally loved it. No criticism from me, only praise an’all, mate. Also, I got “La Paura Del Saggio” (“The Wiseman’s Fear”) this afternoon… 1140 pages there. Well, considering the 730 pages of the previous book, it should take me roughly 8 days to finish the bastard. Well, this is it. You got yourself a new fan, mate. Ok, I’ll sign off here. Huh. I saw ‘the Onion’ and expected some sort of sarcastic parody. Instead I read something serious and thoughtful.

FTR, writers *are* our (‘our’ being ‘the readers’) bitches. We’re the employers. Annoy us enough and we’ll just stop reading. Not just ours either – also the editors, the marketers, etc. Writers gotta bend over for an awful lot of people for very little reward (not just book authors, but writers for shows, etc) – one of many reasons I would never want to be one even did I have the talent.

I do have to admit – George R. R. Martian started to annoy me starting a couple years before the book before this one came out. There’s a difference between ‘having a life’ and ‘not doing your job’ and it looked more and more like the later the longer it went on. I vacillated between being horrified by the rabid fans and feeling like if it took me this long to finish my projects at work, I’d be fired.

The book was released, and it left me wishing he’d just taken some years off without promising anything to the fans. At that point I realized I was starting to care in the ‘creepy rabid fan’ way and stopped following progress on the next book at all, and was pleasantly surprised later when I found out Dance With Dragons had just been released. I read it and was *much* happier than with the last, though reading some reviews after… wow, those are some *bitter* fans :/

I found out my sister (who has NEVER been a reader or a geek) has been following the TV show (she didn’t even know it was based on books, if that gives you an idea), so I gave her the books and started watching it with her. The show is *excellent* and I’m happy that he took time out to help work out details, and I *finally* got my sister to read! Maybe next I’ll get her interested in some Sanderson or Rothfuss…

Actually, what is says is that it will be released in two parts. The first part comes out this month and the second part comes out in November. It also says the book will be 1400 pages (a full 40% more than the English version). I would be fascinated to know the reason for such a phenomenon. Maybe some literary quirk of the translator? I’ve read books in Portuguese before, and I’ve never noticed such a drastic surcharge in pages due to translation.

  42. Torres
    Posted September 15, 2011 at 2:27 PM | Permalink

The problem is to make a book of 1400 pages it would cost almost same as two books (in Portugal a book has almost 40% higher in price than in Usa for example), cause it would need some special cover to dont fall upon is size, so the option to people keep buying it and dont go into the english versions is split it in two parts.

The first part have 704 pages, and the second will have a bit more, is not the best way to solve the problem, but is the only way. The publishers of the book in Portugal have to follow the standard configurantion of their colection, this book, with reduced configurations is 1400 pages, it would be supose to be much more.

Most times when a book have more than 1000 pages, in Portugal, is split, cause most of us dont like to read, and if you compare with Usa, we are a lot less, so they have to find way to atract people, it is hard to please everyone, i didnt like the idea of split the book but once they told me the reasons i knew that it was the only way.

It may be sad to say this, but books here have an average of 1000 per edition, knowing that Name of the Wind is only in second edition here you may understand the problem of the situation.

    Sorry about my english*

Completely unrelated, but in my desperate attempts to find a copy of NotW in Korean (available for purchase in the states), I found Kvothe’s prologue written out in Korean Hangul. It is a mostly direct translation, and pretty badass I think. There are some annoying roman characters, but other than that, check it out.

Pat Rothfuss, Pat Rothufuss, Wherefore art thou Pat Rothfuss? The days drag on to weeks yet still we see no post. If it were not for Facebook we might’ve feared the worst.

ANYWAYS…. you’ve probably got a lot on your plate Pat. I’m sure we all understand you can’t be here to entertain us every few days with your witty jokes. Hell, I bet if you posted that your using this time to work on the 3rd book no one would bother you at all until you said it was okay. Can’t wait until you have time to amuse and enlighten us with your blogs once again!

    Sincerely,

The 30th marks the end of an academic term for me -an onerous task earmarked highly by that most ugliest of beasts: the deadline. I can’t help but feel that perhaps that self-same, doggedly selfish, impersonal beast is diligently preying upon your own sense of peace, time-management and family balance. The weighty perils of necessary procrastination weigh heavily upon us all, albeit with broader consequence to one afforded such success in the realm of NY Times bestsellers. I imagine that your pressures rival the peril of deep-sea divers given ony dixie cups for protection.

As an acolyte and fan of the highest and most reverent order, I wish you peace, control and a semblance of control that allows you to function and maintain an achievable balance betwixt happiness and success. Laugh with your boy, love with your wife, and truly live with your family.

As fans, we thirst for crumbs from your table. As peers, we feel the stress of balance and work. But as rabid fans, we cry out heartily for word of your well-being. That you haven’t graced the headlines as the latest victim of fortunes’ vile is a grace – but don’t neglect the power of a simple ‘hello’ and ‘all’s well’ to placate the adoring minions. We love the muppet – and always will. You’ve cultivated allegiance, sir – let the troops know you fare well.

Sincerest regards and wishes of peace and tranquility,

    Hi Pat,

First of all I thought you were German and it was a pleasant surprise to see you are an American (nothing against Germans as they live in the country next door to me, but…). If I would have known, I would have read your books in English instead of Dutch (it was an awesome translation though).

Lol, I had secretly hoped No. 3 was already out, but as book No. 2 was released in 2011 and No. 1 in 2007, I have a faint feeling I still have to wait a few years.

I totally, TOTALLY, enjoyed your Kvothe and the realism of him telling big stories about himself when he was young and his search of getting more “sympathie” (as the magic is being called in Dutch). By how you tell the events, I have a feeling that besides No. 3, also a No. 4 and hopefully a No. 5 will be coming out. :-)

    YAY!

That would be so cool to learn about writing from Pat. In all honesty, I’d sure love for him to talk more about writing here but I think he has his hands full. Hope the teaching is going well. All I know is that Fall term is kicking my ass out here in Oregon. It’s only the second week and I already feel burnt-out.

    My load is:
PHIL 490 (I defy anyone to make sense of Kant but if you can, keep it to yourself)
    ENGL 446
    ENGL 310
GER 211 (Mark Twain was right about the German language)

    Why am I grumbling?
Because I’m a disgruntled 37 year old 3rd year student at University

Anyway – I really just wanted to thank Pat for writing such a great story. I hope you can take all the time you want and need for the third book.

    Dear Mr. Rothfuss,

Is this your inspiration for the name Denna? It is from the book “A History of Iran: An Empire of the Mind” and is discussing early Zoroastrianism.

“It was a characteristic of the new religion that philosophical concepts or categories became personified as heavenly beings or entities-indeed these
seem to have proliferated, a little like characters in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. One example is the idea of the daena. According to one later text, a beautiful maiden appeared to the soul of a just man after his death. She was the personification of all the good works he had done in life.”

    Folks,

I have been following (digitally, of course) Pat since early 2008, after his book hit the shelves, and I am quite certain that he only posts a blog when it is ready and complete, with a meaning and structure. Plus witty and funny.
Which takes time – to write, check, rewrite, recheck and post.

So if he hasn’t posted anything it simply means he doesn’t have the time.
I am sure this blog remains on his priority list, however there is only so many hours in a day.

Ask yourself, do you know his day to day schedule so that you can judge whether he has time or not?

Don’t take this ‘negligence’ personally, Pat will be back as soon as he can.

Doctor Who >= Buffy. Although I have to say that the sooner riversong leaves the show the better my soul will be.

Steven Moffat at the helm hasn’t really done much for me. Don’t get me wrong, Blink is one of my favorite episodes. I just feel the show needs to be more about the doctor and a pretty sidekick with her gormless boyfried hanging out in all of time and space, rather than a long-term love interest and constant cliff hangers. Didn’t enjoy that last season at all at all.

Pat. I typically do not read a lot of fantasy, although I am a voracious reader, consuming about 4-5 books a month. Borders was closing in August and I saw your book The Name of the Wind on the table. I bought it. Five, nights later I finished it. Nothing was done in my hone for those days. All I did was read. Fantastic book, the writing, the imagery the story, all there. I wanted the second book, and lo and behold, it was there also. How lucky was that? I did not have to wait 4 years to read it. Almost like waiting for Ken Follett’s World without End. Saying, I was very happily reading your new book, A Wise Man’s Fear, is an understatement, but Read incessantly. Loved The name of the Wind. Read it in 5 days straight. Had to stop and walk the dog and cook for my husband. Very impressed. loved the book, and was thrilled that the second book was already published. Am now 58% through the book. Could not put it down, but, upon reading Kvothe’s retelling of the Golden Screw story, I had to stop reading for a while. Really thinking this over…Was THAT story REALLY necessary? Either it’s a private joke, or just lowered you a lot in my hero worship scale. It was just so out of place in this story. I was disappointed that you for some reason reverted to its use. I will continue reading. I still love Kvothe as do all your readers, am tired of being in the woods with the mercenaries and hope we leave soon. But please, NO MORE Golden Screw stories, that is beneath you.

    • Posted October 13, 2011 at 7:24 PM | Permalink

The thing is though, I don’t think it was Pat’s intention for there to be too much hero worship around Kvothe by the readers. Well, maybe it’s not putting it right, but we’re meant to be seeing the ‘back stage pass’ to the life of a hero, warts and all. And that Golden Screw story is just some teenagers having a joke, as teenagers do. It’s a nice little reminder of Kvothe’s age at that point in the story, and also a good example of Pat showing you that Kvothe isn’t just some epic hero, he is also a teenager who says stupid things and jokes around with his university mates.

I don’t know about everyone else here but for the golden screw story was very telling about what would happen to Kvothe. Like the boy with the golden screw he is searching for this answer, finds it, and it ends kind of badly. More importantly is that Kvothe knows this story but does not see the revelation in it, one that is pointed out to him throughout the book the second book i think. he must open his eyes and look at what he is doing before he regrets it. Of course we know he does not.

    Dearest Mr. Rothfuss,

Day after day, i click my bookmark for your website.
I used to click it with joy and great anticipation.
Now i feel a lingering dread as i see the main page load on my screen.
Every day, i hesitantly hover over the “Pat’s Blog” link.
I hold my breath and squeeze my eyes shut as tightly as i can.
A few seconds pass before i gather up the courage … my finger muscles twitch ever so slightly before i hear the distinct “click” of my mouse.
It sounds like a gunshot to me.
All at once, a thousand thoughts rush through my mind …
“Is there a new post? Will today be the day? Is it the same thing again? I know he is busy, but is he THAT busy?really? Doesnt he know we miss him? I hate that we have become so dependant on his writings and i like that much more for it. I’m so happy that he got those teaching gigs. I hope he is spending a boatload of time with Oot and family. Did’nt my wife ask me to pick something up on the way home? What the hell am i going to make for dinner tonight? Damn, i forgot to stop at the store on my way home … ill just have to run out later. Ok i need to stop sitting here with my eyes closed and ishouldprobablystopholdingmybreathnowasi’mstartingtogetalittlelightheaded … OK it’s time to look”
I ever so slowly open one eye (and take a deep breath) … and there it is, coming into focus.
    “A few links…”
I squeeze my eyes shut again to hold back a tear.
I do not wish to ever see it again.

So, pretty pretty please, with euphonious sugar on top.

Thanks much and hope to hear from you soon

Wow. You take the cake for most patronising post here. I think what you thought was euphonious sugar was just a sickly sweet and rather drab attempt at emotional blackmail.

Why can’t you just wish him well and let him make decisions about what he does? Seriously, you sound like a small child who hasn’t been given free sweets from the friendly shop-owner for a while and is throwing a tantrum.

      Peace out.

Checked Pat’s facebook (the one me made where it was just a normal profile rather than a group. He still uses that one occasionally.)

Someone put a post on his wall saying:

“Now has TWO books signed by Pat Rothfuss :) He was giving a lecture on “Why Fantasy Matters” :) Funny things he said during the lecture to come later, hehe. And he remembered the lesbian unicorns and my name :D”

So I think it’s safe to assume he’s just busy with teaching rather than having any issues with family. Lets let the man breath a little now! We can be patient.

P.S. Sorry to whoever’s post that was on his wall, I’m not a stalker, I’M NOT!

It seems like the last couple years provide a pretty solid indicator that he likes to blog. He’s kept up with it well past the point in his career when it could be explicable as an audience building strategy, and he was from the start putting more vim into it than that motivation alone could likely have accounted for.

Those who are demanding re: needing updates should know that, despite good wishes, you are in all probability exerting some level of pressure on him to detach from the kind of engagement with fans that this blog has long represented. I’m not suggesting that pressure would be sufficient to keep the blog stopped, I’m just saying the attempt to make posting into a heavy obligation fraught with the management of your distress likely places what weight you are contributing to the situation squarely on the side of the scales labeled “stop posting” not on the side labeled “post merrily”.

Besides, he’s doing a new job, teaching creative writing, which he’s indicated had long been a goal of his, and he probably is taking that pretty seriously. And, since we know the author is all characters in the book (or is that dreams?) we can draw many valid conclusions about things his days are now especially filled with:

    1. Doubling students’ tuition when they answer questions incorrectly.
    2. Refusing medical care to students that lie.
    3. Having some of his most talented and independently minded students somehow heat his leg to an uncomfortable extent.
    4. “Throwing” students off of roofs.
    5. Vigorously enforcing his institutions’ policy regarding candles.
    6. Being particularly smart and bearded.

I’m missing many examples (some help?), but in any case those things are all hard work, and that’s part of the picture. But the other part is, again, while he has many, he also doesn’t need any good excuses to not blog more posts than strike his fancy. All respect to missing the posts, they are often very nice, but try not to muddy his fancy.

I love #5; I bet UW does have a candle policy, or one regarding open flames, anyhow.

Ah yes – page 20. You can have decorative candles in your dorm room as long as the wick has not been burned, burning candles being prohibited. But forget about candles – check out page 24: “Individuals who need to clean deer or other large game must make arrangements to do so off campus.” BUT you can clean small game or fish in specially designated campus kitchens! I do not remember gutting small animals being part of my undergraduate experience, but maybe it would have been enriching. . .

OMG still no post from Pat whatever will I do? I know I’ll read all of the over exagerated post that have started becoming ammusing in their own right.

Pat, keep up with molding the minds of future authors and being a dad, come back to us when you fell like it.

In the newsletter from Pat’s german publisher it said today that his european book tour has been cancelled and more info could be found here, which is apparently not the case. I am a bit worried.

The World Fantasy Convention appearance also seems to have been canceled (at least, he’s not listed as a guest of honor). I’m also worried – I really hope everything is okay with Pat and his family and friends.

Today the first part of “The wise mans fear” came out in the german translation. Yes, indeed…the first part. In German they had to cut it into two parts of 860 and 520 pages… roundabout 1380 pages of text in total.
The english bound edition had about 1008 if i remember right.

So now I finally can reread the book in my mother tongue.^^

I hope Mr. Rothfuss is alright and everyone precious to him too. This silence is strange and makes me worry…

I think that your comment is inappropriate since Patrick asked us not to. It’s inappropriate also that I’m responding to this but I would ask that no one else mention anything about this or reply to it.

I feel like a moron right now.
You see, I heard the news via a friend on Facebook, and I went directly here to post this comment.
It’s only after that I realised Patrick had posted a new blog entry, in which he explicitly told us not to post the kind of comment I had just posted.
I tried to remove mine, but I can’t.
So I would really appreciate it if the Powers That Be could do that for me.
I feel kind of bad right now, sorry for the inconvenience.

I wouldn’t worry yourself about it, worst thing that’ll happen will be pat will personally come to your house and kick your ass, which would be kinda cool.

And maybe there could be shirts that say:

            “Pawed By the Bearded”

            I know, I know – sorry :)
