Those of you who have been around for a while know about the picture book I wrote a while back.
Some of you might even have heard me read it story-time style. It’s huge fun to read to a crowd, and I do it whenever a venue has sufficient AV setup available, because, y’know, picture book. With pictures.
(It’s not what it looks like.)
- Side Note: we just recently managed to get more hardcover copies back in stock at the Tinker’s Packs, if you’re interested in picking one up. They were impossible to find for a while….
As I said. I’m guessing most of you who read the blog already know about this book, since it’s been out since 2010 and I’ve talked about it on the blog several times since then.
What I’m guessing most of you *don’t* know is that about a year ago I wrote up a script for a sequel. Since then, the fabulous Nathan Taylor has been slaving away in the art mines, hewing beautiful graphics from the living rock.
I have to say I really like this arrangement. I spend a couple days writing a script, then get to turn the story over to someone else for, let’s be honest here, most of the heavy lifting. It’s so nice compared to having to do all the work on a story myself….
Anyway, we’ve finally reached the point where we’re announcing the book all official like:
(Click to Embiggen)
Those of you who have read the first book know how amazing Nate’s art is. When I teamed up with him that first time, I knew he was good, but I didn’t realize how good. The quality of his work really amazed me. He turned my amusing little story into something really brilliant and cool.
So imagine my surprise when I started to see the finished art for this second book, and it was even better than before. Like all real artists, Nate is always developing his craft, and as a result he’s even more amazing now.
For example, in my script, I wrote. “I want something imposing. This is no mere door. I want a fucking eldritch portal.”
Nate worked on it for a while, then sent met this:
I said, “Yes. I think that is sufficiently eldritch.”
So what (I hear you ask) is this second book about?
Well… you should know by now that I don’t go in for spoilers. But I’m not opposed to offering up a bit of a teaser that doesn’t give anything away….
For one thing, the Princess gets a younger brother.
(Say it with me: Awwwww….. )
For another, in this book the Princess goes exploring in the Deep Below.
And no, that’s not a spoiler. Why? Because it’s in the title of the book. It’s called “The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle: The Dark of Deep Below.”
There are a few versions of the book available for pre-order over at Subterranean Press.
The first is the lovely hardcover with the nice paper. The same format as the first princess book.
The second is the limited edition. That one’s leather bound, and signed by both me and Nate. Plus it has extra concept sketches from Nate, a color dust jacket, and will include my original script write-up (parts of which are pretty funny, if I do say so myself.)
The third is the lettered edition which has everything included in the limited version, AND its own slipcase AND a piece of unique hand-drawn art by Nate himself.
Fair warning, the Limited Edition of the first book sold out in less than 24 hours. So if you want one of these, you might want to make your order sooner rather than later.
Or you could just wander over there and take a sneak peek at more of the teaser pictures.
It’s your call…

Looks amazing, Pat! I got my order in.
Though I have to say, after the end of the first book, I’m more than a little concerned about the fate of the Princess’ brother in this one.
Very nice!
Will this part deux come with Endings the First, Second, and Third?
Yay sequel! Will this one come with it’s own cute foil sticker too? :) Thanks Pat!
Seriously, NEED the sticker…
or already embossed onto the cover like the Newbery Medal?
There will be stickers….
I really wish there were some way to read these without buying first. I’m more than happy to get a cool collector’s item at a reasonable price but not before I have any idea if I will enjoy it or not. =(
Libraries.
Besides, you already know if you like his writing or not, especially since this is a sequel. So buy it or not but don’t try to wheedle him into posting the whole story online. 1) Man’s gotta make a living and his living is selling books. 2) He’s not that desperate for your $60. The limited edition will sell out. It did last time, and in less than 24 hours. That’s why they’re printing more this time.
I tried to request the first one from the library a few weeks ago. The request came back denied, as there doesn’t seem to be a single library in Canada that has this book. I Love my library, I’d be bankrupt if I had to buy all the books I read.
My love for this is inversely proportional to my Credit Card’s hatred of me. Not my Credit Card company mind you. They’re stoked over my rash purchasing decisions.
Oh, decisions! Do I get the Limited for the awesome factor or the Trade so it’ll match my first Princess book. Hmm… maybe both!
That is a tough choice. I got the trade the first round, but you can’t say no to leather…
I had a similar conundrum…but went with the limited for awesomeness and maybe someday I’ll get a trade to match the first. =)
I’m in for 1. Gotta get that matching 1st edition!
awesomeness!
ordered. :)
Well I was ready to order the book, 30$ no problem.
But 24$ transport cost was a little much :(
Can’t you just drive by? :p
Heh. England I’m assuming?
Shipping to Chile is $27… had to buy the limited edition to justify the shipping cost :D
And preordered. I’m so stoked. One of my favorite things to do is show people the first book and watch as their facial expressions change throughout the book. The last couple of pages are always the best.
Is it really going to be 144 pages? Because that would be slightly more than twice as awesome as the first book.
Yup. There’s a lot more story this time…
So… when is The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle book 3 coming out?
(Someone had to)
I’m in for a Limited, regretted not jumping on that last time around. Nate’s work is great, eyes/expressions and perspective always impress me.
“Please note: If you own the Signed, Limited Edition of the first volume of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle, please mention your copy number when checking out.”
Is the idea here that they will try to send the same numbered copy? Because that would be pretty cool.
That is indeed the idea. Which is one of the things that makes Subterranean so freaking awesome :)
Agreed. They’re pretty much the coolest….
Can I ask about what the deal with the $600 lettered edition is?
Basically it’s a very limited run (26 copies) which includes everything from the Limited, will be bound even better than the Limited (says “likely bound in leather and cloth” so may not be finalized), and come in an exclusive traycase with exclusive art by Nate.
Hi Pat,
You and Nate are really awsome :-) and you’re making me poor. But I’ll just regard my lettered edition as an investment because it will make me incredibly rich if I ever have the heart to sell it. Which will probably never happen ;-)
Is this the book SubPress ordered for the golden ticket or can we look forward to even more awsomeness before book 3 hits the shelves?
Greetings from Germany!
You’ll be seeing more from me and Sub Press. As far as the timing goes…. well…. that’s up in the air right now….
I missed out on the signed limited edition of the first one (though I did manage to get my copy signed at your insanely long day of signing in Houston after WMF came out). Not letting it pass me by again! Ordered. This was an awesome surprise, made my day. Thanks, Pat!
So my daughter walked by – she’s 9 – and saw the image of Princess in front of the door and she squealed, “Mom! MOOOOM! Is that Mister Whiffle?” And I told her it was and I told her there was a second book and I got, “Oh please, oh please, oh please?!”
So I told her that if she keeps doing good in school I would buy her a copy of the second book.
She immediately ran off to do her homework.
I didn’t tell her I’d already ordered it a few minutes before she’d wandered by. ::coughs::
That’s solid parenting right there…. I approve.
Pat you were a poor student once, so you must know the agony you’re putting me through, dangling your expensive shinies in my face. Ah well, future me can foot the bill for this one, too…
I’ve been there my friend. Absolutely been there….
It’s just money, and the leather covered version will make me supreme geek amongst my Rothfuss worshiping friends.
Plus the level of school I’m in has an almost negligible fail rate, and if I pass all the tests I’m nearly 100% guaranteed a job. I’m in a lot better position than a lot of students right now.
As a poor student myself, this was still my reaction…

Ordered. Back to the salt mines. By that, I mean I’ll be sitting in my recliner watching Red Dwarf while knitting ‘stuff.’ :)
Got the email from Subterranean this morning and purchased it immediately. I’m sad I don’t have the extra cash for the lettered edition. It sucks being responsible sometimes. At least I was able to get the limited. Can’t wait to get my hands on this!!
Hi Pat,
I was just wondering…are you going to have the hard cover trade editions for sale in the tinkers pack at a later date? Because I got my copy of the 1st book this way and I have it signed and it makes me very happy. I would love to buy the limited edition but I don’t think I can spare that much money(stupid shipping to Australia! Why do you have to be so much?!).
So, in short. Will it be avaliable to be bought, signed, at a later date? Because if so then I can wait and get a copy to match mine…when I have more money :)
Thanks!
Hi Pat,
I have the same issue as Panda. Would love to have a signed edition, but once I add on shipping (50% of the book cost on top) and tax, that one book will cost over half a month’s salary for me.
While there is no question to me that a book of yours is worth that kind of money, I begrudge all the extra money going to people other than you – it’s much harder to write like an artistic deity than it is to post a package or be a government.
I’ve been trying to get this in my store for almost a year!
Payday cannot come soon enough for me to order this. Now if you excuse me I’ll be drooling in the corner.
Unf… looks so cool. I cannot wait. Seriously, you had me at “eldritch”.
Got an ISBN number yet? Because I want to make sure the Boston Public Library orders a copy to potentially traumatize small children with inattentive parents, like they did with the first one.
This comment made my day.
Oh man, I still need to get the first.
Good thing you put some more in the Tinkers Packs….
And Congrats to both you and Nate! Do you ever plan to put the second out in Paperback as well? I was thinking of getting the first in paperback, oddly, I don’t particularly care for hardcover books, too bulky.
Might be cool to see in E-book too, later on of course.
Matthew, I’ll see your $24 and raise you $3… Worth every penny! Pat, are you doing any other book signings in Little Ole England when you’re over in October? I have a pile ready…
Is SubPress going to be doing limiteds of The King Killer Chronicles?
I rarely buy physical books these days (as much as I love the physical experience of a printed book, I just don’t have any more space). I’d love to see a high-res ebook version of both of these stories.
Hey Pat!! Big Fan!! Just wanted to know if there would be Ebook versions available for sale.. Here in Bahrain, time taken from ordering a rare book online and getting it is extremely time consuming. Sorry if you have mentioned this before and I missed it
Being a big SubPress fan I ordered this the day it first came out. Frankly, I’m surprised it hasn’t sold out yet. I hope we get some advanced warning before NOW goes on sale. That’s the only bad thing about SubPress. One too many beers and a Joss Whedon marathon and you wake up late the next morning to find out Santa’s sleigh has sailed.
Pat, (or one of his lovely assistants…)
You may want to contact SubPress, on the page you linked it has a typo in the title. Wifffle …
Hello.. I was hoping someone could clear this up for me. I would like to get a signed copy of the book, but can’t afford the lettered edition. Does the limited edition book for $ 60 bucks come autographed?
Yup.
Oh yes, it will be mine. I was SO happy to find a real copy of book 1 when you did a signing in CA some years ago.
Order sent, and I can’t wait. That is a really fucking eldridge portal.
And on a more esoteric note, I approve of these adorable childrens stories about a real true ogre in the classic sense.
Hey Pat,
I’ve borrowed a copy of the first book and wondering if you plan on coming out with a boxed set sometime in the future, I don’t own #1 or #2 yet but would like to get a nice box to put them in.
Thanks,
A
I may have over looked a very important piece of information, and if so please forgive me, but when is the shipping date?
The pre-order page says that the book will be published late this year. Unfortunately, I rather doubt that they will (or can, depending on how many decisions remain to be made) give a shipping date before one for publication :(
I was just on the Sub Press site and they are stating that they are trying for a October/November release.
More shipping costs than buying costs? Nevermind, I know it’s worth it!
Awesome. Ordered.
If you were to reply to the bipartite question sequent to the colon in this sentence, what would I learn about your opinion on the subjunctive mood: How do you feel about the subjunctive mood, and would you side with Kvothe or Chronicler in a fight about the subjunctive? (Note that you would be the writer of this fight, and so you are the one who decides who wins the fight.)
yo, this blog is hell to try and navigate through but can anyone tell me what the status is on book 3 of kingkiller? i need closure. and just saying, I forget if this was already alluded to in book 1, but if denna gets got I will hunt you down patrick ruthfuss.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Pat alluded that it would probably be sometime in 2014 in a recent interview.
I don’t think he’ll be confirming any specific dates for some time, as he had to push back the release date of WMF several times. It will probably be sometime in 2014 as PP stated.
In the meantime, try reading the in-depth read-through on TOR.com it’s pretty great.
http://www.tor.com/features/series/patrick-rothfuss-reread
Also Unfettered should be out pretty soon I would assume…
Think it said Spring 2013? We’re closing in on summer over here on the West Coast, so doubt it will be much longer. (Then again I haven’t gone back to check Sean’s site in about 5 months….)
Anywho, that will have a new Four Corners based story in it. I think it’s about regular novel sized too if I’m remembering correctly, but Pat likes to call those short stories. LOL!
I bought the first one on Tinkers Packs when the proceeds went to Worldbuilders. I would like to do the same for the second (of course, that didn’t stop me from ordering the limited edition now). So, will the second book be available on Tinkers Packs in the future?
Just got my copy of the The Thing Beneath the Bed. After all the comments from folks about it, I was still not prepared for that book. Very curious about the second one now :-)
This isn’t exactly related.
I just graduated and drive an hour to work every day. I turn into a horrible horrible person (I’m short skinny and smiley, but not when someone’s driving very slowly or taking their time at lights), because everyone is wasting my time.
I recently started listening to Name of the Wind on tape on the drive, and although I’ve read it three times since discovering it last Christmas, I’m excited to get in the car in the morning, and I welcome bad drivers who delay me as I get to listen longer.
So I just wanted you to know that you’ve likely helped my blood pressure (or you will have in a dozen years or whenever that’s supposed to crop up).
Now the middle of my day is just harder as I’m excited to get back in the car to go home.
(: Thanks!
Eliza
I took a day off yesterday and I thought about not being able to listen to it all day. If I had cheated, it would be over now and I wouldn’t have slept last night, so go self control!
awesome book for childhood. If you want to buy another books like science and fiction, self motivational books, competitive exams books buy it online at snapdeal

So…the Princess goes exploring in the DARK of Deep Below….right? Hate to be Mr. Perfecto about it but, there it is.
“For another, in this book the Princess goes exploring in the of Deep Below.”
I want to buy this, I really do, but with postage being more exspensive than the book :O I just can´t justify it. Especially not because when customs get their hands on it I´ll end up paying 4x the cost of the book when all is said and done :(
Eldritch is definitely my cool word of the day :)
Do you know when will this masterpiece be availabe in Spain? Kids in the school I work at keep asking me about it (even the ones who developed a trauma because of the third ending!)
Really interesting. keep up the good work.
