On The Horizon: NerdCon Stories 2016

Hey there everybody,

Some of you may remember a little thing we did last year called NerdCon: Stories.

NerdConSome of you might remember because I wrote a blog about it. Others of you might remember because you actually came to the event.

For the rest of you: Nerdcon is a convention I started with Hank Green and his team. We wanted to start a new convention that focuses on storytelling in all its forms.

And so we did.

And I’m not going to lie to you, it was pretty great.

We brought in podcasters, musicians, poets, authors, puppeteers, and talked to all of them about stories, audience, genre, and more.

nerd con puppets

(If you’re wondering what’s going on in this photo, that’s fair. You kinda had to be there.)

There were panels and discussions. There were puppet shows. There were presentations and plays and signings and hugs. And kind of a surprising number of games. Some folks played Superfight, and I ran a game of The Extrordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen, which you can watch in it’s fullness right here.

We also had a debate based on the continued shame I have to deal with because my son puts on his socks and shoes by doing it sock-shoe, sock-shoe, rather than sock-sock shoe-shoe, as god intended.

We had panels about storytelling through song, podcasting, and performance. There were panels for fandoms, and about movie adaptations. We talked about diversity, activism, and sex in stories. There was singing and dancing and poetry and a birthday party.

Tons of these were filmed, and you can see them on NerdCon’s YouTube channel, or listen to the rest on their podcast.

There was a Giant squid from the Cephalopodcast. He was hanging out with Joseph Fink from Welcome to Nightvale. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

nerd con giant squid

Except it isn’t once-in-a-lifetime. We’re doing it again this year, only bigger and better.

conventioncenter

(But in the same beautiful space)

This year we’re bringing in even more guests. There will be live podcast recordings, workshops on copyright, improv, and game design. Panels about art, self promotion, and mental health.

The exhibitor’s hall is even bigger than last year, with more vendors. The Worldbuilders Team is going to be there again, too. Rocking the booth and having an awesome time.

And I’ll be there too. I’ll be on panels and playing games. I’ll be talking about stories. I’ll be recording my podcast with Max live at the Show.

The full schedule is available for perusal right here, and it’s packed with amazing stuff.

*     *     *

I’ll be honest with you folks. I’m super proud of this convention. Last year people came up to me and told me that it was the best convention they’d ever been too. One person told me that it was the best time she’d ever had in her life.

The chatter on twitter was pretty flattering, too. Here’s one tweet that particularly warmed my heart.

I’m cutting down on conventions next year. I’m getting too busy, and I don’t like being away from my kids. But this con is something special. We built it to be welcoming and warm. We hand selected the guests to be clever and funny and kind.

Best of all, this convention is small enough that I actually get to hang out with people. It’s not just a seething mass of bodies like San Diego or NyCC. So if you’re looking to catch me at a convention and hear me talk about stories, games, and life in general, this is the place to do it.

The convention is October 14-15, and you should get your tickets soon. It’s a comparatively small convention, so it’s possible that tickets might sell out if you wait too long.

You can get your tickets here.

I hope to see some of you soon,

pat

P.S. If you came to the convention last year, could you share how you felt about it in the comments below? It’s kinda *my* convention, so of course I’m fond of it. It’s like my baby. But the testimonial of people who were actually there tends to be a little more unbiased, and therefore it carries a more weight than mine….

Podcasts Galore….

Heya there everyone,

Things are busy but good here in Rothtopia. Emphasis on busy. I have writing to do, projects to manage, e-mail to ruthlessly prune back, a relationship to enjoy/maintain, kids to cuddle, charity coolness on the horizon, and secrets things to work on….

Not to brag or anything, but I would like to say that on any given day I consistently manage to do at least two of these things. Sometimes three.

Unfortunately, that leaves little time for blogging. Which is a shame, as I enjoy telling stories and sharing news with y’all.

Because I’ve been otherwise tied up, there’s a bunch of stuff I’ve done lately that you might not know I’ve done lately.

For example, here’s a few podcasts I’ve made little guest appearances on over the last couple months.

MBMBaM (My Brother My Brother and Me).

I know I’m late to the game, but I only came to know about the marvelous McElroy brothers over the last 8 months or so. Oddly enough, I discovered them through Griffin’s Amiibo Corner, which is a delicious slide into divine absurdity that I love with a fiery passion.

For those of you out there who live under a heavy rock similar to mine, and therefore don’t know about the McElroy brothers, they are a vast treasure trove of delightful things.

480x270_16669(They’re pretty easy on the eyes, too. Rawr.)

I had a great time answering questions, giving (mostly bad) advice, and talking about parenting stuff with them on their afore-linked podcast.

Magic tavern.

When I was out at Pax East earlier this year, I got a chance to sit in on a live recording of the Magic Tavern Podcast.

PAXEastTavern(Actual Footage)

For those of you who don’t know who don’t know the premise of the show: A guy fell through a portal behind a Burger King and ended up in a fantasy world, so he does what any red-blooded geek would do, and broadcasts a podcast from the tavern there with the help of a wizard and a talking badger.

IFkuVFM(Y’know, like you do.)

And if that doesn’t make you curious about the show, I don’t know what will.

Also, if you’re into this podcast stuff, I’m assuming most of you already know about the podcast that Max and I do roughly every week.

Max & Me Podcast.

But if you don’t know for some reason, there’s a link to it. So you can do what you want with that.

Also, since I’m giving y’all a heads-up of where you can find me doing things other than here on the blog. I occasionally do some live streaming over on my twitch channel. Sometimes I play a game, sometimes I give writing advice or answer questions. It kinda depends on what mood I’m in.

But if you go there and follow the channel, it will send you an alert when I do a livestream so you have a chance of catching me live, which is a big deal, since that means you’ll have the chance to say things in the chat that I don’t pay attention to because I’m too busy mining space ore or getting blown up by orcs.

Alternately, the videos are archived on the site as well.

That’s all I’ve got for today, but stay tuned. I’ll be sharing my schedule for PAX soon, as well as telling stories and sharing other news.

Be good to each other,

pat

GenCon 2016: The Happening

Heya Folks,

I posted my schedule for GenCon a few weeks ago because a few of the events I’m doing require tickets (Typically free tickets) and I wanted to make sure my people got their hands on them before they sold out.

I was right in being concerned, because a few things *are* already sold out, but we’ve got a lot of other festivities going on, so I thought I’d share with you a list of things you can do here in Indianapolis, with or without me.

  • The rest of my Con events

Since a few things are already closed, I figured you’d like to see the list of things that either don’t require registration, or that still have tickets available.

Thursday, August 4

1pm-2pm: Writer’s Craft: Convince the Reader to Care, Capital 1

Friday, August 5

4pm-6pm: An Evening with Pat Rothfuss

This one will be fun. I’ll be reading a bunch of stuff, answering questions from the audience, and telling stories.

This event requires a free ticket, and they’re more than two thirds gone, so if you want to check it out be sure to get in on it soon here. (Even if the tickets sell out, you can show up at the door and trust that some of the folks who got tickets will ditch the event.)

Saturday, August 6

3:00pm-4:00pm: Character Craft: Representing Unconscious Motivation, Capital 1

4:00pm-5:00pm: Writer’s Life: Writers and Mental Health (You’re Not Alone), Capital 1

These panels are all going to be good, but this last one is a subject I’ve wanted to talk about for a while now.

  • Concert Against Humanity

If you missed the Concert Against Humanity last year, it was a ton of fun, and this year it’s going to be on Friday, August 5th at 8pm. It’s run by Max Temkin and his team at Cards Against Humanity, and every ticket comes with swag bags that contain limited edition packs of CAH cards, and other swag from sponsors. (The value of the swag is more than the cost of the ticket.)

They even had me shoot a little promo video for them…

I’ll be grabbing a little bit of stage time, while other more professional performers like Jonathan Coulton, Paul & Storm, Molly Lewis, and a bunch of other cool people do the real work.

Even better, Max tweeted out a discount code for folks to use to get $20 off the tickets.

It’s going to be an amazing time, and I’d also like for Jenn to keep her job, so if you’re at all interested, tickets are available here. I think they’re going to sell out, so you might want to do it sooner than later…

  • Limited edition Draccus

I’ve made it no secret that I love King of Tokyo. The folks over at Iello found out, and we teamed up to make a Draccus monster for the game.

DraccusAd

We launched these for the first time last year at Gencon, but we only had a limited number of them, and they sold out every day. This year, we brought more of our limited stock, so if you didn’t get a chance to grab one before, you can get them at our booth.

What booth is that? I hear you ask….

  • The Worldbuilders Booth (#267)

20160803_155213

Remember the booth I mentioned just a couple paragraphs ago? There’s a ton of stuff happening there throughout the convention. We have lots of geeky swag, the raffle, a deal for a free tote if you buy $100 or more of merch, plus signings with a bunch of cool musicians.

Here’s the full schedule of signings & meet-and-greets:

All of these people are great, so you should swing by whenever you can to check out some awesome merch and fantastic music doers.

  • A chance to play a game with me.

KingofTokyo

In order to encourage people to swing by the Worldbuilders booth, we’re giving people a chance to come play a game of King of Tokyo with me on Sunday at 2pm.

Here’s how it works: If you swing by the Worldbuilders Booth (#267) you can submit your name once for the drawing. If you buy something, you can get your name added to the drawing a second time. Plus, while you’re there, you can check out the cool things that we’re selling for charity. You can get your geek on while making the world a better place.

We’ll be drawing 3 names on Sunday morning, so if you’re at all interested be sure to swing by before the end of the day Saturday.

* * *

Hope you all have a great weekend. And if you’re at Gencon, I hope to see you there….

Cardboard, Malibu, and News about Tak

Hey there Everyone,

Today I was planning on sharing some of the adventures I had at San Diego Comic Con. I was going to talk about my first year as an official Guest of Honor there, include links to videos of some of my panels, and maybe even fess up to the fact that I drank some rum and did a *little* bit of drunken tweeting.

My standee(Also? My very first Standee. Cartoonified by Nate Taylor.)

But other news takes precedence over a chatting about how I goofed off at a convention. We have some info about Tak, and I owe it to y’all to give you details as soon as possible here on the blog. I wanted to be sure you heard it from me at the same time as James sends out an update over at the Kickstarter.

As many of you know, (because you backed it) we recently ran a kickstarter for Tak.

What you might not know is that James and I had been working together on the project for more than two years before the kickstarter ever launched. We talked about concept. We discussed the shape the kickstarter would take. James playtested the game exhaustively. And we spent a long time bringing together all the things required to make not just the *idea* of a game, but the game itself. We needed art. Boxes. Wooden pieces. Linen Boards. Wooden boards. Different wooden boards. Little baggies. Design for capstones. A printer for the book. Illustrations. Prototypes. Quotes. Etc etc etc.

There’s a ton of little things that go into making a game. And that’s not even counting logistical stuff like warehouses to store stuff, packaging and transporting all the pieces, assembling the game…

And then you haven’t even started the process of fulfilling everyone’s orders. All the picking, packaging and shipping that involves….

kvothe___bast_by_cerseidm-d9s2oyq(No. Not that kind of shipping. The other kind.)

Simply said, there’s a lot of moving parts to make something like this work.

So for months before the kickstarter, we were getting quotes, making prototypes, finding printers and shapers and makers who could turn Tak from a beautiful daydream into a beautiful game. Then we crossed our fingers, pulled the trigger, and hoped y’all would want to be a part of it.

Then this happened.

TakFinal

When I say that we weren’t expecting this level of success, I’m not being midwestern or modest. Yeah, I was pretty sure we’d hit $50,000 without much trouble. But my realistic expectation was that we’d hit something between $250,000 and $500,000. Hell, the contract James and I wrote up between the two of us, didn’t even include terms for anything higher than $700K.

Because of your enthusiasm, we blew the doors off the kickstarter. But some types of success are problematic. There’s a big difference in producing 5000 games, and producing 20,000 games. The scaling breaks down at a certain point.

Recently, we found our wooden piece manufacturer wasn’t prepared for an order of this size. And this isn’t a podunk guy in his garage, either. We’re talking about a professional woodworking facility here. But even though they’re pros, they don’t have an infinite amount of space. The wood has to be bought, dried, stored, milled, and finished. There are a finite number of hands and machines that they can use to perform these tasks.

Early on, James and I agreed that we wanted to produce things here in the US. We didn’t want them made cheap in China in sweatshop conditions. We wanted well-made, craftsman wooden pieces made in a shop that follows good safety regulation and and pays their people a decent living wage. Because of that, we had to accept that things would cost a little more, and take a little longer….

But then the kickstarter pretty much doubled our absolute best case-scenario…

Anyway, I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this. Like so like many other hugely successful Kickstarter campaigns, Tak is going to ship a little late.

And I am so sorry about that. I thought we were pretty much bulletproof. We planned our best plan. We padded our schedule. Even so, we’re going to be late.

The good news is that it looks like we’re only going to be shipping about a month late, which isn’t bad for a kickstarter that raised more than 20 times its original goal. To say nothing of the fact that if you’re a fan of my books, a month is barely even a blip on the Rothfuss Late-o-Meter.

Gech. I just made myself sad with that joke. Again. I’m sorry. I hate disappointing y’all.

The first batch of pieces will be finished the first week of November. After that, the games must be assembled (at the board game plant) and shipped twice (once to the warehouse, and then to you). Which means that our earliest date to begin shipping these rewards will be mid-December.

Most of the other perks we’re making are on schedule or ahead of schedule. But we didn’t collect enough money for shipping to pay for sending everything out separately. With one exception.

DBox5

Devi’s Box and Devi’s Board are still scheduled to ship on time. (Either if you ordered them in the kickstarter directly, or if you upgraded to them in the Pledge Manager.) The reason is that Wormwood is making their own pieces for their board, so they aren’t affected by this production delay. And we always planned on those boards being shipped directly from Wyrmwood Gaming, so the shipping cost was already factored into that item’s price.

And since I’ve mentioned the Pledge Manager, please note that the deadline to update your information and/or upgrade your order is August 5th (about a week away). Not only will that be your last chance to order the kickstarter exclusive stuff, but he more people who complete the pledge manager, the smoother the fulfillment process will go. So if you haven’t gone in and done that yet, please consider doing so.

James has written his own update over on the kickstarter here. So if you’re looking for more info, or if you have questions, head on over there.

Later all,

pat

Acquisitions Inc: The Web Series

The problem with taking a break from the blog, is that the longer I stay way, the more I feel like I need to write something really good when I come back. I feel like I need to make some big announcement or tell some sort of touching story or something like that.

But here’s the problem: writing something good usually takes a lot of time and energy. And I usually taking a break from the blog because I’m too busy, or exhausted. Or both.

So I’m lowering the bar here. Just letting you know about something that might not be on your radar…

Months ago, I went out to Seattle and spent a couple days playing D&D with the Acquisitions Inc folks. It was a nice break from my life. I don’t get to game much any more.

Anyway, they filmed it, edited it up, and have been releasing episodes for a while now.

Like this one:

Honestly, even if you don’t watch the episode, you should at least watch the intro. Kris Straub is a damn demented genius.

The good news is, because I’m mentioning this pretty late in the game, there’s already a bunch of episodes out, so you don’t have to wait forever in between them.

Episode 3 has a pretty great preview:

I’m pretty proud of that.

And it wasn’t just on their website. It’s the YouTube preview. It’s everywhere.

Acquisitions inc preview2

(Yeah. Good luck sleeping tonight.)

Anyway, if you’re into D&D and are looking for something to binge, you can find all the episodes here. There were some pretty great moments.

Have fun…

Geeks Doing Good: Foxen Nightlight, Draccus Plushy, and BatManda

Hey there everyone. As I write this, our Geeks Doing Good Fundraiser has been running for about four days, and we’ve raised about $97,000 so far to make the world a better place.

However Because we only go for a week, this means the fundraiser is more than halfway over. It’s ending on Monday, June 13th.

That means if you want to jump in and buy some of our book or game bundles, you better do it soon. Ditto if you’d like to help us spread the word to your geeky friends and family.

Today I’m going to show off some of the things that we added late to the fundraiser, or that we just haven’t put pictures of up in the blog yet.

For example:

  • Cloaks

This is something people have been asking for for years, so we’re finally giving it a try. These come in two different sizes, but they both have a bunch of little pockets, and that’s the important thing.

cloak

Also, I would like to add, that when I added this picture to the blog, I discovered it was called BatManda.

  • Terri Windling Prints

dryad

(Click to embiggen, really)

I love Terri‘s art, and she was nice enough to send us some of her signed prints for the charity. These are hard to get ahold of, and we only have a few. So if you want some of this beautiful art in your home, you should grab one over there.

  • Foxen Nightlight

Foxen Nightlight Replica 8-1280

If you see this Foxen nightlight and haven’t immediately wanted it, I cannot help you find joy in life, because you don’t have the physical capability.

  • Secret Cubby Books

CubbyBook

The same is true for these cubby books. You absolutely need this thing in your life.

  • A Freaking Puzzle

puzzle

It’s so cool. The art for this is by Matt Rhodes (concept artist for Dragon Age: Inquisition), and we thought it made an awesome puzzle. It’s our first foray into puzzles, though, so if that’s something you’re into, check it out.

  • So Many T-Shirts

We’ve got all manner of shirts this year….

Shirt_RatQueens

There’s a shirt from Rat Queens, a comic I love with a fierce love. I’m so glad they were willing to come in and help out the fundraiser.

parkour_shirt

We’re teaming up with Jim Butcher again on another Dresden Files shirt, this one all about PARKOUR!

Shirt_Ademic

A new shirt from Temerant. Fair Warning: this one will be available ONLY during this fundraiser – after Monday, you won’t be able to get your grubby little paws on it ever again.

Shirt_WB

And for those of you who have been asking for a Worldbuilders shirt, here you go. A nice, subtle way to wave your geek flag and show the world that you’re an awesome, generous, kindhearted person to boot.

Note: If you order three shirts, in the Indigogo fundraiser, you save ten bucks….

  • Eolian Mugs & Coffee

CoffeeAndMug

These stoneware mugs are made right here in Wisconsin, but they look like something you might find at the Eolian. It’s a 22 oz. mug that can hold enough of your beverage of choice to get you through the day. And if your beverage of choice happens to be coffee…

We have three coffee blends: the standard Imre blend, a dark Tarbean blend, and an exotic Tinuë blend. The Worldbuilders team loves the coffee shop we worked with, and spent some quality time with the blends to make sure they matched the cities in the series. I know, I ask so much of my team, making them drink coffee.

  • Doodled Slow Regards

DoodledSlowRegard

Last year, we asked Nate Taylor to draw in a few copies of The Slow Regard of Silent Things. We figured he’d do some quick sketches or fun doodles, something small but unique. As usual, Nate went above and beyond, this time with full-blown ink illustrations. We asked him to illustrate a few more books for us this year, so we have 10 remarqued Slow Regards available, and they’re already starting to go…

  • Doodled Princess Books

DoubleSignedPrincess

The last time Nate was in town, I dug through our vault and brought out some of the long-gone first edition/first printings of the first Princess book, and had Nate doodle in some of them. We’ve got five of those available now, each one with a different character doodle. The first editions are rare enough as it is, but one that’s double-signed and doodled is a rare treat.

  • Jonathan Coulton Picture Book

PrincessWSHCoverWe’re bringing this picture book based on Johnathan Coulton’s song back into print. My kids love it, and even if you don’t have kids, I’m guessing you’ll love it too….

  • Perfumes and Soap.

FragranceAndSoapMockup

In case you’re wondering, everyone agrees that Bast smells wonderful….

  • Draccus Plushy.

DraccusPrototype3

What’s almost as cute as the plushy itself is watching Amanda lose her mind over how much she loves it in this outtake reel…

Okay. I’ll stop there. That’s all I’m going to put in the blog, but you should know that just *some* of the stuff we have up in the IndiGogo. There’s book bundles too. And the chance to buy a *ton* of games super cheap.

If you want to see the rest of the stuff, it’s all over here.

And if there’s anything you have questions about, be sure to hit us up in the comments or via email at fundraiser (at) worldbuilders.org. The team is working hard to answer them, and the fundraiser only has a few days left, so you don’t want to miss out.

Thanks for chipping in, folks. Thanks for spreading the word and helping to make the world a better place.

Foreshadowing: Geeks Doing Good

So for the last two years, we’ve run a summer fundraiser for Worldbuilders called Geeks Doing Good. It tends to happen near the begining of June, and it only lasts for a week.

*Because* it only lasts for a week, it can be easy to miss. So today I thought I’d throw y’all a heads-up about it launching next week.

geeks doing good dates

It’s especially important for me to give y’all some advance notice this year, as I’m going to be traveling back from Phoenix ComicCon with my family on the 6th, so I won’t be able to make a lot of noise about the festivities here on the blog until Tuesday or Wednesday.

For those of you who are new to it, Geeks Doing Good is an opportunity for Worldbuilders to experiment with some new merchandise and team up with cool people like Jim Butcher (like we did last year, and are again this year). We also sell unique experiences that might not be right for everyone, but are *perfect* for others (like the chance to go on the JoCo Cruise, or play games with authors or members of the Worldbuilders team at Gencon).

So yeah. Today I’m gonna give a little taste of what’s to come so you’re more likely to jump on board and/or help us spread the word when we pull the trigger on this next week.

Here’s a tiny piece of what’s on the docket:

  • So Many Shirts

As of right now, we’ve got a confirmed shirt with Jim Butcher, Sam Sykes, Kurtis Wiebe (of Rat Queens) and me. Also, because people have been asking for it, we’re going to do a brand-new Worldbuilders t-shirt, too.

Tee-ser

You can grab any of these, or pick up a t-shirt 3 pack and get a discount while picking a few of your favorite designs. (Or get three of the same shirt. Or get two of one shirt and one of another. Or whatever. What I’m saying here is that you have a lot of options. We’re giving you options.)

We’ll also have a new shirt from Litographs, this one inspired by The Name of the Wind. We can’t show you the art quite yet, but it’s a beautiful thing to behold.

  • A New Hoodie

Black_Ivare_Enim_Pullover

After how much everyone loved the Eolian hoodie last year, we figured we should do another one. This one is a pull-over, rather than a zip-up, to really show off Sarah Hartwick‘s “Ivare Enim Euge” design.

  • Bumper Stickers

Folks have been asking for a way to show off their Worldbuilders pride, so we took a suggestion from the crowd and produced a few different Worldbuilders Bumper Stickers.

unnamed

(I’m the one that suggested “Totes M’Goats”)

  • Many, Many Other Things

There will be other items familiar to those of you who have seen our prior fundraiser: Digital perks, game bundles, custom jewelry, cool books, and even a cabin on the JoCo Cruise.

I’d show you pictures of all the products if I could, but I know it’s better to wait until we actually launch the fundraiser. So instead, here’s a teaser collage. Clever viewers of the sort that like to dig though my books for clues will probably be able to make some educated guesses about what a lot of these things are.

Cluster

To see the full list in all its glory, you’ll have to wait until we go live on Monday. I won’t be blogging about it until Tuesday or Wednesday, but if you want to be notified as soon as launch, you can sign up for such a notification right here (which, conveniently, will also be a link you can follow to the campaign itself once it launches).

Thanks for being awesome…

***

P.S. As a reminder, I’m currently out at Phoenix Comicon (My schedule is here), and if anyone’s around and willing to help us by volunteering at our Mega-booth, (#740) they can contact the lovely Thera on Twitter.

P.P.S. My family will be with me on this trip. So be aware that if you see in public with a kid, that’s probably not the best time to approach me. Yes. My children are adorable. But they are not part of the convention attractions. Please be gracious and give us some space.

What’s more, when I’m with my kids, please be aware that I’m being a dad, not an entertainer, convention guest, or autograph machine. If you’d like to hear me talk about writing, see me read my stuff, ask me a question, or get something signed you should *really* consider going to one of the events we’ve scheduled for those specific purposes. Don’t try to do it when I’m trying to have a quiet moment and some ice cream with one of my sons…

Later all,

pat
